Sources indicate the San Francisco 49ers are making a change, with reports suggesting they are releasing kicker Jake Moody, as per insights from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
In the course of the 49ers’ narrow 17-13 triumph over the Seattle Seahawks during Week 1, Moody’s performance faltered with a missed 27-yard field goal in the second quarter, compounded by a blocked 36-yard attempt. Successfully converting either kick would have leveled the score.
After Moody’s unsuccessful kicks on Sunday, Fox Sports’ Pam Oliver shared observations that players showed significant displeasure, with visible displays of frustration in the form of thrown helmets.
Following the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan initially conveyed support for Moody, firmly stating there was “no question” concerning the kicker’s spot on the team roster. However, he shifted his stance on Monday, suggesting potential consideration of alternative options.
“We are assessing every possibility at this moment, examining different avenues,” Shanahan conveyed to the press. “Whether we maintain the current lineup, consider bringing in individuals for tryouts, or explore options for the practice squad, we are actively evaluating all available choices.”
“I’ve just concluded discussions with the team, and I understand the personnel department will be investigating all available options to present us with potential alternatives.”
A potential candidate could be seasoned kicker Greg Joseph, who previously spent time with the 49ers during training camp. The 31-year-old has a history of playing for six NFL franchises, including being part of three teams last season: the Washington Commanders, New York Jets, and New York Giants.
Moody, who entered the league as a third-round selection from Michigan in 2023, demonstrated a respectable rookie year, successfully converting 21 out of 24 field goal attempts and achieving a 60-for-61 record on extra point attempts. Nonetheless, his challenges can be traced back to 2024, where his accuracy dipped to 24 successful field goals out of 34 attempts, with a mere 10 successful kicks out of 20 from distances of at least 40 yards.
