Former full-back Rob Kearney posited that Ireland’s varied display during their 27-17 Guinness Six Nations win against Wales represented the “authentic Ireland”.
Andy Farrell’s squad maintained their faint prospects of securing the championship trophy through a bonus-point triumph in Dublin. However, they faced a more formidable challenge than anticipated from a Welsh side now facing their 15th consecutive loss in the tournament.
During an appearance on Virgin Media Sport the day following the game, Kearney put forward the idea that the untidy character of the encounter offered a clearer portrayal of Ireland’s current standing compared to their decisive victory against England in the third round.
The seasoned player, with 95 caps, remarked, “The showing was likely somewhat inconsistent.” He added, “It serves as an ideal example that one is neither as poor as critics suggest after Round 1, nor as exceptional as praised following Round 2.”
“This display more closely approximates what one might consider the real Ireland.”
“Certainly, numerous advantages were evident. The substitutes performed well, Doak’s debut was impressive, and securing a bonus point victory – these were all commendable aspects. Nevertheless, our expectations remain slightly higher.”
“Regarding our tactical play, we failed to operate in the optimal zones of the pitch. We engaged in excessive play.”
“Our attempts to circumvent [Wales] commenced somewhat prematurely.”
“We might not have afforded [Wales] the deference they merited. We hadn’t foreseen their defensive capabilities being quite so strong.”
Fellow analyst Andrew Trimble similarly expressed disapproval of Ireland’s execution, stating: “I believe we struggled to manage the unpredictability. Our ability to handle their line speed wasn’t great. In our multi-phase play, we showed some initial innovation, but then we became more conservative.”
“Our kicking was uncharacteristic, rather subpar. Though not as poor as our showing in Paris.”
“Furthermore, our very choice to kick seemed uncommon and somewhat inconsistent. We spent an excessive amount of time playing rugby in our own territory. A great deal transpired during that match.”
