New York Giants’ Russell Wilson on Malik Nabers: ‘I came here because of him’

Russell Wilson is hoping to be the driving force behind an organizational turnaround, but that’s not the only reason he chose to sign with the New York Giants this offseason.

While both parties had mutual interest last offseason, a deal never came to fruition, leading Wilson to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This time around, though, the Giants were able to convince Wilson to join the roster on a one-year deal worth $10.5 million for the 2025 campaign.

Wilson explained at the Fanatics Fest this weekend that throwing the ball to superstar Malik Nabers was a major factor in his decision.

“I came here because of him, big reason (for) it. I really wanted to play with a guy who is special like him,” Wilson said of Nabers. “Also, too, we’ve got a lot of guys who have put a lot of hard work into it. We’ve got a really good defense, rushing the passer. We’ve got a lot of dudes. That’s a good thing.”

The connection between Wilson and Nabers has the potential to be a strong one. Nabers is coming off a historic campaign in which he set the record for most receptions by a rookie wide receiver at 109. It would have been far more had he not missed two games due to a concussion in the middle of the season.

Wilson, meanwhile, is looking to prolong his career another season after helping lead the Steelers to a playoff appearance in 2024. After missing the first six games of the season, Wilson made 11 starts for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024. He completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 2,482 yards (225.6 YPG), 16 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 95.6 passer rating.

Nabers was able to put up historic numbers with a slew of disappointing arms under center. If he can build a connection with Wilson quickly, there’s no telling where his ceiling will be.
