LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Paul O’Connell’s understanding of Portugal’s situation had its limits.
After observing the Ireland rugby squad he is assisting defeat Portugal by an unprecedented 106-7 on Saturday, the temporary coach confessed he felt compassion for the home team.
The 16-try triumph exceeded the 83-3, 13-try victory over the United States in 2000 and established Ireland’s benchmarks for highest score, most tries and largest differential.
Ireland achieved this result without 17 of its British and Irish Lions representatives.
“I sympathize with Portugal, but we performed very efficiently and maximized our opportunities,” O’Connell stated to Virgin Sports.
“This summer tour is exceptional because the Lions tour is happening concurrently, yet I am pleased with how our squad executed their roles. It is excellent to see some players earn caps, score tries, and experience training in an international atmosphere.”
Eleven distinct players scored tries for Ireland, featuring two each for first-timers Hugh Gavin and winger Shayne Bolton, and one for debutant flanker Alex Kendellen.
Flyhalf Jack Crowley successfully converted 12 of 15 attempts. Additionally, there was one penalty try awarded.
Portugal was competing against Ireland for the inaugural time. Furthermore, it was Os Lobos’ initial test since March, when they secured fourth position in the Rugby Europe Championship.
Ireland’s subsequent match is against New Zealand in Chicago on Nov. 1.
