Just recently, Jack Catterall used various social media platforms to formally request that Turki Alalshikh arrange a match for a world championship opportunity against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, the current WBA welterweight titleholder.
Public Reaction to Catterall’s Request
The user base of X is generally ridiculing the proposition, many believe Catterall (31-2, 13 KOs) is overreaching by seeking an unearned title shot, which they predict would result in a monotonous and unexciting contest.
Catterall holds rankings of #8 by the WBO and #10 by the IBF within the 147-pound division. His recent victory was a less-than-impressive 7th-round technical decision against Harlem Eubank on July 5th, which took place in Manchester, England. This bout was considered typical of Catterall’s unremarkable fights, ending prematurely due to a cut he sustained.
Prior to this, Catterall suffered a defeat against Arnold Barboza Jr. in a 12-round split decision last February, a loss which he did not subsequently attempt to rectify through a rematch.
If Turki intends to involve Catterall, suitable opponents from the welterweight division could include:
– Karen Chukhadzhian
– Shakhram Giyasov
– Raul Curiel
– Roman Polanco
Should Catterall be defeated by any of these fighters, it is suggested that Turki should cease any further collaboration, excluding him from future Riyadh Season events.
Rolly (17-2, 13 KOs) is reportedly seeking a lucrative fight for the initial defense of his WBA 147-lb title, secured after a 12-round unanimous decision upset over Ryan Garcia on May 2nd in New York City’s Times Square. He has expressed interest in facing Manny Pacquiao next.
It’s unlikely that Turki would engage in such a matchup, given the anticipated negative feedback from fans regarding Rolly defending his title against Pacquiao, aged 46 and not ranked in the WBA’s top 15. Shakhram Giyasov is currently positioned as the leading contender. Overlooking Giyasov in favor of Pacquiao would be seen as a controversial decision, especially after Pacquiao’s inability to secure a victory against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in June.
A rematch with Ryan Garcia would be a more favorable option for Romero, contingent on Turki’s interest. This potential fight holds appeal for fans. Garcia mentioned recently that his training was inadequate and a hand injury affected his punching ability in the previous encounter.
Me @Turki_alalshikh 🤝 Lets get it on @SignUp4KOs
