In the Toronto men’s singles competition, Alexander Zverev progressed to the last sixteen against Francisco Cerundolo, securing a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2 victory over Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.
This triumph marked the German competitor’s 500th victory at the tour level throughout his career.
“It’s an incredible accomplishment. Few players have attained that benchmark,” Zverev commented.
“Naturally, I am hoping for another 500, or perhaps even more to come.
“As you commence your career, your aspiration is to participate on the tour, to achieve a successful career, and secure as many victories as possible.”
Former world number one Daniil Medvedev was defeated by the current title holder, Alexei Popyrin.
The Australian player conquered the tenth-seeded Russian with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory, thus securing a match against fifth-seeded Holger Rune in the subsequent round.
“I believed I should have prevailed in that initial set,” Popyrin stated, having led Medvedev 4-2 prior to conceding the set.
“I was in control, I felt exceptionally comfortable on the court, and then something occurred.
“I somewhat lost focus and started overthinking my shots a bit. When this transpires, if you play at a rapid tempo against him, he begins to gain a better feel for the ball.”
Third-seeded Lorenzo Musetti exited the tournament after being defeated 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 by twenty-sixth-seeded Alex Michelsen from the United States in the third round.
Michelsen’s victory establishes an all-American showdown in the fourth round, where he might encounter either Learner Tien or Reilly Opelka.
Eighth-seeded Casper Ruud also advanced to the fourth round with a 7-6, 6-4 victory against Nuno Borges and is scheduled to confront eleventh-seeded Karen Khachanov, who overcame Emilio Nava 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo prevailed over his fellow countryman Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets and is set to compete against either top-seeded Alexander Zverev or Matteo Arnaldi in the ensuing stage.
