In a surprising turn of events, the Colorado Rockies triumphed over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. They managed to recover from a 9-0 disadvantage after the initial half-inning, ultimately securing a 17-16 victory with a walk-off (box score) thanks to a two-run homer from outfielder Brenton Doyle.

Remarkably, the Rockies are only the third team in the past half-century to achieve a win after conceding at least nine runs in the first inning. The last instance of this occurred in 2006, when the now-Cleveland Guardians accomplished the same feat. Conversely, this is the first time the Pirates have suffered a loss while scoring 16 or more runs since 1893. Furthermore, the Friday game marked the first MLB contest since 2008 in which both teams managed to score at least 16 runs, a feat previously seen in a game between the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox.

Here is a detailed listing of teams that have lost a game after scoring 16 or more runs during the Wild Card era:

The Pirates initiated the game powerfully, attaining the distinction of being only the second team in Major League Baseball history to record a first inning featuring nine or more runs, 10 or more hits, and both a grand slam (Oneil Cruz) and a three-run home run (Andrew McCutchen), according to OptaStats. Nonetheless, the Rockies gradually reduced the lead as the game unfolded, narrowing it to 9-4 by the third inning, 15-10 by the fifth, and 16-12 by the eighth inning.

The bottom of the ninth inning witnessed the Rockies’ offensive surge against Pirates reliever Dennis Santana. Hunter Goodman commenced the rally with a one-out home run, bringing Colorado within three runs. Subsequently, Jordan Beck drew a walk and then scored on a Warming Bernabel triple. Thairo Estrada then drove in Bernabel with a single, reducing the deficit to a single run. This set the stage for Doyle’s heroic moment:

The Rockies’ comeback, erasing a nine-run deficit, equals their largest in franchise history. They had previously achieved this against the Atlanta Braves in 2010 and the Miami Marlins in 2008.
