Raducanu Teams Up with Nadal’s Former Coach, Roig

As she gears up for this year’s US Open, Emma Raducanu has expressed her “enthusiasm” for collaborating with Francis Roig, previously a coach for Rafael Nadal.

Since March, the 22-year-old had been informally training with British coach Mark Petchey, but has now formally integrated Spaniard Roig into her coaching setup.

Roig, aged 57, partnered with Nadal’s uncle Toni from 2005 to 2022, contributing to all 22 of the Spanish player’s Grand Slam title wins.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Raducanu stated, “He undoubtedly possesses a wealth of knowledge, and I’m truly excited to keep working with him and have his support.”

This week, the British number one is competing in the Cincinnati Open for the first time since 2022. Following a first-round bye, she is scheduled to face either fellow British player Katie Boulter or Serb Olga Danilovic in her initial match.

Roig has accompanied Raducanu to the WTA 1,000 event in Ohio, the final tournament before the season’s concluding Grand Slam commences in New York on August 24.

Raducanu commented, “Things are progressing very well. This marks my second day with [Roig] here, but I had a few training sessions with him in London prior to coming here.”
