Wolff: Ecclestone, Horner & Briatore at Alpine F1 a “Mafia Reunion”

Chief of Mercedes, Toto Wolff, has playfully suggested that the combination of Christian Horner, Bernie Ecclestone, and Flavio Briatore in an ownership position within the Alpine Formula 1 team would resemble a ‘mafia gathering’.

Horner’s departure from his role as Red Bull’s team leader occurred in July, and his subsequent actions remain unknown. However, circulating discussions within the racing community suggest that the 51-year-old is contemplating investing in a Formula 1 team.

Alpine has emerged as a plausible choice, owing to Horner’s rapport with executive advisor Briatore. It is speculated that Briatore, alongside former Formula 1 head Ecclestone, might serve as investors to bolster Horner’s endeavor.

During the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, Wolff commented on Friday, stating, “That would certainly be a captivating narrative and would undoubtedly generate considerable excitement surrounding Formula 1.”

He further added, “In my opinion, this is essential for the sport. Formula 1 has consistently revolved around intense competition, engaging drivers, and compelling figures.”

“Reflecting on the notable era of team proprietors and leaders – figures like Frank Williams, Ron Dennis, Flavio, [Luca di] Montezemolo, and several others – it might be beneficial to explore avenues to revive that spirit.”

“The convergence of these three individuals in such an exciting endeavor, essentially a ‘mafia reunion,’ would undoubtedly provide compelling content.”

The Renault Group maintains a controlling interest in the Alpine Formula 1 team, with 24% ownership held by the US-based investment entity Otro Capital, encompassing prominent athletes such as Anthony Joshua, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Rory McIlroy. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are also affiliated with the group.

Consequently, Horner, Ecclestone, and Briatore would not represent the pioneering instances of well-known figures possessing minority ownership within the team. However, Briatore has refuted any likelihood of such an occurrence.

Briatore, who guided Renault to Formula 1 championship victories in 2005 and 2006, stated, “I am presently not giving any consideration to this matter.”

“Currently, Christian is no longer involved in Formula 1. I anticipate his return in the near future, but as of now, he is not associated with Alpine.”
