Saleh: Jaguars Have “Advanced” Offensive Sign-Stealing.

When you consider the idea of “signal observation” in collegiate football, the immediate assumption is often focused on Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines and the significant consequences faced by that team due to their extensive operation, notably guided by Connor Stalions. However, the activity of deciphering opponent’s play signals is a somewhat accepted practice within competitive sports. The distinguishing factor lies in the magnitude and complexity that Stalions employed in uncovering Michigan’s rivals’ tactics.

San Francisco 49ers defensive strategist Robert Saleh addressed this topic during a press briefing on Thursday, preceding the scheduled match against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Saleh mentioned that Jacksonville utilizes a “signal observation method” that is typical among those influenced by Sean McVay’s mentorship, which includes the Jaguars’ rookie coach, Liam Coen.

“Liam and his support personnel, with several individuals joining from Minnesota, have implemented a — legitimate — sophisticated system for observing signals, designed to consistently create advantageous scenarios,” Saleh commented. “They excel at leveraging formations to extract any conceivable detail. Consequently, we must ensure our signals are secure, and our communication is effective in mitigating any potential clues we might inadvertently reveal during play.”

Saleh clarified that he has encountered similar strategies among other protégés of McVay, like Kevin O’Connell with the Minnesota Vikings.

“Their proficiency in this aspect is remarkable. The entire lineage from Sean [McVay] to Kevin O’Connell and their associates, consistently engage in this practice,” Saleh noted. “This presents unique challenges. They will inevitably exploit situations to their advantage, and our response is to execute with precision, uphold fundamental principles, and exert our utmost to outperform them.”

Saleh was keen to emphasize the legality of this practice and its common occurrence. He simply pointed out the exceptional skill set that this particular group of offensive strategists possesses.

Saleh elaborated that the signals could be obtained from individuals on the sideline or even gleaned from a player’s specific hand gestures. Regardless of the origin, these teams utilize this system to gain a “significant edge multiple times during a game.”

“It represents the ultimate strategic move,” Saleh stated.

Coen, in his inaugural year as head coach, has led the Jaguars to a 2-1 record early in the season. His background includes a four-year stint under McVay with the Los Angeles Rams, where he mentored wide receivers and quarterbacks, and took on the role of offensive coordinator in 2022.

The 49ers, on the other hand, have achieved a 3-0 start and are positioned as 3.5-point favorites for Sunday’s game, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
