Schauffele Leads Baycurrent Classic, Eyes First 2025 Victory

YOKOHAMA, Nippon (Associated Press) — At the Baycurrent Classic competition taking place in Nippon, Max Greyserman together with Xander Schauffele were neck-and-neck on the leaderboard following Saturday’s third set of games.

Greyserman, competing amidst rainfall, came in with a score of 71 which was par, whereas Schauffele delivered a score of 67 at the Yokohama Country Club. Both players have a score of 201 which is 12-under.

Greyserman has his sights set on his very first PGA Tour title — during the previous year’s competition, he came in second.

The same cannot be said for Schauffele. On Sunday he has the potential to add to his already impressive record. This consists of two major titles, a gold medal from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, in addition to a plethora of other PGA Tour titles.

Schauffele’s maternal parentage originates in Taiwan. However, she was brought up in Nippon. It goes without saying that a victory would be a dream come true.

He mentioned that it would undoubtedly be a special experience considering that his grandparents are present, together with the fact that his mother and her brother grew up in that particular location. He stated that although it is still far off at that point, it would be an incredible feeling to imagine the possibility.

Greyserman, who has either shared or been the sole leader since the start, simply mentioned keeping his position.

He stated that it was obvious that he and Xander were tied, and as a result, he would have liked to have increased his lead and performed better throughout the day. However, he noted that it is impossible to play perfectly for 72 consecutive holes. He mentioned that the conditions were difficult, and he did not really adapt to the conditions effectively. However, he stated that tomorrow would bring a new opportunity.

There were a total of five players, including defending champion Nico Echavarria with a score of 69, Michael Thorbjornsen with a score of 66, Byeong Hun An with a score of 66, Garrick Higgo with a score of 68, and Si Woo Kim with a score of 69, who were only three strokes behind going into the final set of games.

Echavarria indicated that he was very proud of the way he battled on that day to provide himself a chance, especially in those circumstances, and he was referring to the rainfall that had been occurring throughout the day.

It stands as the only PGA Tour tournament that takes place in Nippon. The event has been moved to Yokohama in the current year, after previously being held east of Tokyo. It first took place during 2019 and Tiger Woods was the champion.
