F1 Podcast: Inside the Small Team Overachieving in F1

This week brings a new installment in our sequence of discussions with Formula 1 team leaders, as we sit down with Ayao Komatsu at the headquarters of Haas, recognized as F1’s most compact team.

The relatively small size of Haas belies their strong sense of unity and collaborative spirit, as highlighted throughout this captivating conversation.

Ayao’s history with Haas extends back to the team’s inception in 2016. He was chosen by Gene Haas last season to take on the role of team principal, stepping into the shoes of the outspoken Guenther Steiner. Ayao’s journey began in Japan, and he later relocated to England during his teenage years to refine his English skills and pursue his ambition of working in Formula 1. He steadily progressed through engineering roles with Lotus and Renault, fostering a close working relationship with Romain Grosjean.

As the highly contested Formula 1 season reaches its conclusion, Haas is vying for 6th place in the constructors’ standings, competing with Aston Martin and Racing Bulls. Ayao shares his insights on crucial strategic choices made earlier in the season that have contributed to Haas’ improved competitive performance. Oliver Bearman matched the team’s highest ever placement, securing fourth position in Mexico, and reinforced this achievement with another significant points haul in Brazil.

Joining James Allen in the studio to add perspective is Dan Fallows, who previously held key technical leadership positions at Red Bull and Aston Martin in F1.
