Hearn: Benavidez Can’t Beat Opetaia

Eddie Hearn omits specifying his preference for Benavidez over Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez. It’s conceivable he considers Gilberto’s aggressive punching approach to be an ideal match for Benavidez’s combat style.

Opetaia’s boxing technique mirrors that of unified light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, characterized by extending his lead arm, delivering strikes, and then withdrawing. His punching force would likely pose a significant challenge for Benavidez, as he would be connecting with numerous powerful blows.

Benavidez’s strategy of delivering a multitude of punches exposes him to being struck. This vulnerability was evident during his bout with David Morrell, where he was dazed on two occasions and subsequently knocked down.

Promoter Eddie Hearn informed reporters regarding David Benavidez’s most compelling potential opponent, stating, “Beterbiev and Bivol. Bivol presents a formidable challenge to overcome. However, in my opinion, the most exciting matchup is Beterbiev versus Benavidez.”

An encounter with Artur Beterbiev would be an outstanding contest for Benavidez, provided it materializes in the near future. Beterbiev is currently awaiting the third bout in his series with Bivol. Should this be delayed until 2027, it could be past the optimal time for Benavidez to face Artur, as Beterbiev is currently 40 and would turn 42 if their match doesn’t take place before 2027.

Hearn commented, “From a stylistic perspective, that would be an incredibly captivating contest. Benavidez is not genuinely suited for cruiserweight. The 175-pound division is a suitable weight class for him. The fight against Zurdo is logical due to both being Mexican, and it offers him the opportunity to claim a world title in a third weight category.”

The upcoming bout between Ramirez and Benavidez promises to be entertaining. This particular contest would represent one of the most perilous challenges in Benavidez’s professional career. Given Ramirez’s considerable punching ability, the possibility of his victory cannot be disregarded.

“I do not believe he would defeat Jai Opetaia, though I lean towards him overcoming Zurdo, although I remain somewhat uncertain. It’s a compelling matchup. I am keen to witness him pursue significant fights in the 175-pound division,” Hearn expressed regarding Benavidez.
