Ex-global top-ranked player Ferrero mentored compatriot Alcaraz through all six significant victories, having previously referred to him as his “fourth offspring.”
“This entire scenario feels quite unusual – I genuinely never anticipated it,” British tennis professional Jodie Burrage conveyed to BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Everyone can conjecture and hypothesize, but from my own history of discontinuing partnerships with coaches, occasionally it’s simply innocuous with no deeper meaning; the collaboration just ceases to be effective.”
“However, that specific coaching dynamic clearly functioned – given his accomplishments, how could it not? It’s genuinely astonishing.”
Subsequent to the separation, Ferrero informed the Spanish sports publication Marca, external that he had expected their arrangement to persist unchanged and that he would accompany Alcaraz to the Australian Open as his mentor.
Nevertheless, the victor of the 2003 French Open indicated that “specific problems” arose concerning the finalization of contractual agreements.
“Possibly these could have been ironed out had we convened for a discussion, but ultimately, that didn’t happen, and so we chose to discontinue,” Ferrero stated
“Evidently, this has constituted a drastic alteration for all involved. Adjusting presents difficulties. For myself, naturally, this period is far from agreeable.”
Ex-British athlete Naomi Broady mentioned perceiving “fissures” in the duo’s rapport while providing commentary for Alcaraz’s loss to Cameron Norrie during the Paris Masters in October.
“Alcaraz performed quite poorly. A significant amount of strain was palpable,” Broady remarked.
“One typically doesn’t witness such behavior from him on the court, but he was audibly yelling towards his support team and receiving some response, indicating clear signs of discord.”
Samuel Lopez, who became part of Alcaraz’s entourage in 2024 and had previously coached him during Ferrero’s absences from competitions due to personal matters, has stayed with his group.
“My squad is identical to last year’s. Only one individual is absent. However, the remainder of the personnel, everyone else, is unchanged,” Alcaraz further commented.
