Raducanu wins first match since coach split

Britain’s top-ranked tennis player, Emma Raducanu, secured her initial triumph following her swift departure from the Australian Open and the subsequent termination of her coaching arrangement with Francis Roig.

At the Winners Open held in Romania, the twenty-three-year-old player achieved a dominant 6-0, 6-4 victory against Belgium’s Greet Minnen.

Raducanu, who is the leading seed in the competition, delivered three aces and successfully broke her opponent’s serve four times during the seventy-minute match.

Her next opponent will be Kaja Juvan from Slovenia, whom she is scheduled to play on Wednesday in the second round of this WTA 250 tournament.

Last month, the victor of the 2021 US Open exited the Australian Open in the second round, having suffered a disappointing 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 loss against Anastasia Potapova.

This was succeeded by the conclusion of her collaboration with Spanish coach Roig, resulting in Raducanu seeking the tenth coach of her professional career.

Concurrently, another British player, Sonay Kartal, secured her spot in the round of 16 at the Abu Dhabi Open by defeating Spain’s Cristina Bucsa with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (10-8).

Her subsequent match, scheduled for Wednesday, will be against Switzerland’s highest-ranked player, Belinda Bencic.
