Munster’s general manager, Ian Costello, has acknowledged the province’s disappointment regarding the departure of their attack coach, Mike Prendergast, who has been linked with the Gallagher Premiership champions, Bath, at the conclusion of the current season.

Bath’s head coach, Johann van Graan, is keen to recruit the 48-year-old former Munster scrum-half, Prendergast, to fill the void left by Martin Gleeson, whose temporary agreement at The Rec will not be prolonged this summer.

Van Graan has been actively seeking a permanent offensive strategy coach since Lee Blackett left to join Steve Borthwick’s staff at the close of September, and it appears he has now secured his desired candidate.

Prendergast, originally from Limerick, is poised to reunite with Scotland and Lions standout Finn Russell in the West Country, following their previous collaboration at Racing 92.

“My family and I have thoroughly cherished our period back in our homeland since coming back to Munster in 2022. Guiding the squad I once played for has been an immense privilege, and this choice was exceptionally challenging.

“Throughout my years of coaching and playing, I’ve experienced numerous settings, but Munster will forever occupy a unique position in my affections, and these past four years have been truly delightful.

“Collaborating with both the athletes and the coaching staff has brought immense satisfaction, but I sense that now is the opportune moment to pursue a fresh endeavor.

“For my family, this period back in our home country has been exceptionally memorable. A specific standout has been the opportunity to work alongside my brother Gar (who serves as Academy & Pathway Manager) over the last three years.

“I am committed to dedicating my utmost effort to guarantee the club achieves its maximum potential success as we near the crucial final phase of the season.

“Furthermore, I wish to utilize this moment to express my gratitude to Ian, Clayton, the entire coaching team, the players, and the Munster supporters for all their encouragement,” he stated.

Munster general manager Ian Costello remarked: “Although we are disheartened by Mike’s choice to leave Munster Rugby, we completely honor his decision and are immensely appreciative of the impact he has had during his four years here.

“Mike’s expertise as a coach and his personal qualities have deeply influenced our setup, and he was instrumental in several of our most significant achievements recently, such as our victory in the URC.”

“Mike will consistently embody the spirit of a proud, devoted Munster individual, and he departs with the highest regard and esteem from all the players and personnel. We extend our best wishes for success and contentment to Mike and his family in their upcoming venture.”

Munster head coach Clayton McMillan further commented: “From my arrival in Ireland last summer, I’ve had the chance to collaborate closely with Mike, and it’s readily apparent why he commands such high esteem.

“He is an outstanding coach possessing an astute rugby intellect and a talent for engaging with players in a manner that elicits their top performance.”

“His input to our coaching unit and the broader atmosphere will be missed. Although we regret his departure, I am confident he will excel in any future challenge.”

“Speaking for the entire coaching staff, I extend our sincerest wishes for all future success to Mike and his loved ones.”
