Kyler Murray will be Vikings’ starting QB. What about J.J. McCarthy?

Precisely a year prior — March 13, 2025 — Daniel Jones joined the Indianapolis Colts roster under a pretense of “contending” for the starting quarterback position against Anthony Richardson Sr. The instant his single-year agreement was finalized, it conveyed an impression of being orchestrated.

It appeared as though the Colts’ leadership was articulating necessary statements to sustain a simulated rivalry. The starting role seemed destined to fall into Jones’ experienced hands, leaving Indianapolis’s general manager, Chris Ballard, to try and stimulate any possible trade interest for Richardson’s entirely untapped potential. Fast forward a year, and this is precisely the Colts’ current situation: Jones has been given a two-year, $88 million extension, and Richardson is now available for trade discussions.

This precise situation comes to mind when considering the pivotal moment facing the Minnesota Vikings, who on Thursday inked seasoned quarterback Kyler Murray to a single-year contract, thereby signaling to their 2024 first-round draftee, J.J. McCarthy, that the primary quarterback role in 2026 is probably not destined for him.

Certainly, the Vikings will maintain the pretense of a “contest” for some duration. This might extend even through training camp, mirroring how the Colts managed Jones and Richardson last summer. You can also anticipate hearing a rehashed, yet familiar, rendition of head coach Kevin O’Connell’s January remarks regarding the necessity of McCarthy’s rigorous development and challenge.

“I am fully in favor of a competitive environment,” O’Connell stated during his post-season press briefing. “The specifics of how that translates to practice repetitions, I believe, hinges entirely on — clearly, J.J. will be a paramount focus for our coaching staff, our organization, and for me personally. We will ascertain the exact shape of this as we proceed through, you know, the initial phase of this offseason concerning roster management, and I am confident Kwesi and his team will excel in that regard.”

The individual O’Connell mentioned as “Kwesi” is the former general manager, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who was dismissed from his role just 17 days subsequent to that statement. This illustrates the swiftness with which assured declarations can become obsolete within the Vikings organization presently. Bear this in mind whenever you next hear O’Connell or any other member of Minnesota’s franchise speak definitively about McCarthy’s prospects within their quarterback unit.

My assertion stems from two present certainties: Kyler Murray’s acquisition was intended for him to ultimately assume the primary quarterback role for the 2026 season; and McCarthy now has a year to exert every effort to avoid replicating the situation of Anthony Richardson Sr. — a youthful reserve quarterback whose unfulfilled potential means his trade value is currently not generating significant interest across the league.

Despite any public statements from the Vikings, insiders at the NFL scouting combine indicated that Minnesota sought more than just an experienced player to challenge McCarthy. Rather, the scenario was depicted as the Vikings seeking a credible candidate who could permanently replace McCarthy should he fail to make significant progress in 2026. This strategy, according to sources, partly stemmed from McCarthy’s difficulties with decision-making and processing during his 10 starts, coupled with genuine staff concerns regarding his durability over his initial two professional seasons—including a discouraging five-game absence due to a high-ankle sprain last year.

The circumstances proved sufficiently bothersome that sources confirmed Minnesota’s leadership was unwilling to rely on McCarthy making a significant improvement this offseason. Consequently, it was evident the Vikings were seeking an experienced alternative — and Kyler Murray emerged as the compelling one-year “demonstrate-your-worth” choice, possessing ample ability to secure the starting role and perform capably enough to establish himself as a legitimate primary quarterback past 2026.

With Murray now part of the team, what does this imply for McCarthy’s future? He faces several potential outcomes. These include:

Persuade the Vikings that Murray is not the premier quarterback on the squad

Murray did not join Minnesota with the intention of being McCarthy’s secondary quarterback. Furthermore, the Vikings would not have pursued an agreement with him if they believed that was his sole capability. Therefore, in this regard, Murray holds a significant advantage—he is confident in his ability to be the Vikings’ primary signal-caller, a sentiment shared by Minnesota’s leadership. This, however, does not preclude McCarthy from altering perceptions within the organization. It will necessitate McCarthy delivering the finest offseason performance of his professional journey. This entails demonstrating complete command of O’Connell’s offensive schemes, dedicating himself to enhancing physical strength over the upcoming months, striving to re-establish rapport with his locker room peers, and crucially, contending with Murray for the starting quarterback role through every available method and chance.

Should this not evolve into a genuinely unrestricted quarterback contest, McCarthy will need to engineer a path to create one. Quarterbacks are certainly capable of achieving this. I attended the San Francisco 49ers’ training camp in the summer of 2023 and observed firsthand Sam Darnold securing the 49ers’ reserve position over Trey Lance, thereby revitalizing his own career.

For McCarthy, this translates to prevailing in every possible practice repetition and exhibiting his full capabilities during any preseason game time he receives.

Exercise patience and anticipate an opportunity arising throughout the season

Even if McCarthy is eventually outperformed by Murray, the NFL season is extensive, and chances may emerge that could redefine a player’s trajectory. When Baker Mayfield lost his standing with the Carolina Panthers and was moved mid-season to the Los Angeles Rams in 2022—his third NFL team in under a year—he leveraged a limited span of just five starts under Sean McVay to prove his worthiness for another primary role, a chance many thought he’d never receive. The subsequent season, he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a single-year contract to contend for a starting position, which revitalized his professional path.

It’s pertinent to observe that Murray has been sidelined from starts due to physical ailments in four of his last five campaigns. Should such an occurrence unfold in Minnesota, it becomes McCarthy’s imperative to capitalize on any chance to demonstrate his capability to fill the role effectively.

Endure the 2026 season and anticipate a shift in the dynamic between Murray and the Vikings post-season

Murray’s single-season contract with the Vikings contains a clause preventing him from being franchise tagged—implying that if he performs strongly for Minnesota, he will once again enter unrestricted free agency. There exists a possibility that Murray performs subpar, leading him to be excluded from the Vikings’ future schemes. Conversely, Murray might excel and opt to explore free agency, thereby excluding Minnesota from his long-term prospects.

Given no secured outlook past 2026, the truth is Murray functions as a transitional quarterback for the Vikings. A transition to what? To his own extended contract in the subsequent offseason? To the Vikings being swayed to reconsider McCarthy again in 2027? Or a transition allowing the Vikings to bypass both players and pursue an entirely distinct path in 2027, potentially by selecting from what is projected to be a robust and skilled quarterback pool in the 2027 NFL Draft. The potential outcomes are manifold.

Contend for the primary quarterback position, then seek a new beginning if Minnesota selects Murray

The least favorable alternative involves seeking a new environment, yet such occurrences are common. Jones assumed the starting role from Richardson in Indianapolis, and now Richardson is exploring a trade and a new beginning elsewhere. Occasionally, a change of location—or several changes—can eventually re-energize a career (e.g., Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield). At other times, it merely results in being confined to a permanent backup role (e.g., Trey Lance). And in some instances, it at least positions a player for future consideration in a broader perspective (e.g., Mac Jones’ present status as the 49ers’ reserve quarterback).

McCarthy has encountered disfavor among certain individuals within the Minnesota organization. He has forfeited a degree of belief and assurance. Should he fail to universally regain this, securing another equitable opportunity within the franchise will prove challenging for him. This scenario unfolded with Mayfield during his tenure with the Cleveland Browns. It also occurred with Darnold when he played for the New York Jets. And it affected both athletes during their time with the Panthers. The positive aspect is that the league abounds with teams consistently seeking to bolster their quarterback talent, even if it’s for the second spot on the roster.

We should not overlook that McCarthy’s former head coach at Michigan, Jim Harbaugh, now leads the Los Angeles Chargers. Although it’s inconceivable to envision him ever displacing Justin Herbert with the Chargers, it’s not impossible for him to secure a role as Herbert’s reserve in 2027 and subsequently restart his professional journey from that point. The requirement is simply to demonstrate potential meriting further development and then to seize minor chances as they appear, always remembering that a staff member might transition to another team as a head coach or general manager and require a quarterback they trust.

Should you doubt the feasibility of such events, then you have likely not observed Malik Willis’s trajectory over the recent months.
