Andretti Global nearing 4th Indy 500 entry decision

Andretti Global is nearing a decision regarding whether to field an additional vehicle for the 110th Indianapolis 500 event scheduled for May.

For the past five years, the team has entered a single additional car into the Indianapolis 500, driven by Marco Andretti, who declared his retirement during the off-season. Despite this, the existing three-car roster might still be expanded with an extra entry for the IndyCar Series’ premier race. A resolution on this matter is expected shortly, as stated by Ron Ruzewski, Team Principal for Andretti Global.

Ruzewski conveyed to Autosport.com, “We are still actively deliberating the most advantageous course of action for the Indy 500, as any new addition must contribute positively.”

He further emphasized, “An extra vehicle at Indy must enhance performance and avoid causing disruptions. I hold a strong conviction in this principle. I believe we are quite close to finalizing a choice. I anticipate reaching a definitive conclusion within approximately the next week or so.”

Ruzewski has been inundated with calls from racers keen to present their arguments for securing the unannounced position. Without question, the most apparent contender is Colton Herta, who departed the team after the previous season to serve as a test driver for Cadillac’s Formula 1 squad, concurrently competing in Formula 2 with Hitech TGR.

Several factors suggest Herta is a highly probable choice if the organization opts for a single additional entry in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” One such factor is TWG Motorsports’ involvement with General Motors in managing the Cadillac F1 initiative, in addition to its ownership and operation of Andretti Global. Herta, boasting seven appearances in the Indy 500, currently faces no scheduling conflicts for that particular weekend. Furthermore, he has an open schedule for approximately the next month, as F2 events in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were called off due to the continuing unrest in the Middle East.

This weekend, Herta is also present at the Grand Prix of Arlington, offering support to his previous Andretti teammates, Marcus Ericsson and Kyle Kirkwood, as well as his successor, Will Power.

Ruzewski commented, “It would be an oversight to claim that he (Herta) wouldn’t be a candidate we would contemplate. However, we must also consider what is most beneficial for him and his initiatives, along with the broader implications, before reaching any conclusion.”
