Luka Dončić attempted to maintain the Los Angeles Lakers’ nine-game winning streak on Monday night. However, his effort was unsuccessful, and the Detroit Pistons secured a 113-110 victory, prevailing over the Lakers in an interconference showdown between two prominent NBA franchises.
Jalen Duren stifles Luka’s final shot
With nine seconds remaining, the Pistons held a three-point lead, and the Lakers had an inbound play originating from their frontcourt. The Pistons successfully deflected LeBron James’s pass into play, forcing Dončić to scramble and retrieve the ball near the center court logo.
By the time Dončić established control of the basketball, Jalen Duren was already closely guarding him well beyond the 3-point line. Dončić tried to create a clear shooting lane from the left wing. Yet, Duren remained tightly guarding him, compelling Dončić to attempt a contested turnaround shot with Duren’s hands obstructing his view.
The shot had no chance of success and landed well short of the rim as the clock ran out on Detroit’s three-point triumph.
Following the game, Duren was questioned about his thought process before executing the pivotal defensive play.
Lakers contend in a congested Western Conference
For the Lakers, this defeat brings an end to a nine-game winning streak that included wins against the Timberwolves, Nuggets, and two victories over the Rockets, enabling Los Angeles to climb to third place in a tightly contested Western Conference playoff picture.
The Lakers currently hold third place with a 46-26 record, maintaining a two-game advantage over the Nuggets, Rockets, and Timberwolves, who were virtually tied for fourth through sixth positions at the time of the Lakers’ loss. The competition for playoff seeding and home-court advantage, following the top-ranked Thunder and second-place Spurs in the West, is anticipated to be one of the most fiercely fought races for the remainder of the regular season.
With their win, the Pistons comfortably retain control of first place in the East at 52-19, leading the Celtics by five games and the Knicks by 5.5 games. However, with All-Star Cade Cunningham indefinitely sidelined due to a collapsed lung, the Pistons require as much buffer as possible with just 11 games left in their regular season schedule.

Daniss Jenkins maintains strong performance as Cunningham’s replacement
Daniss Jenkins once again stepped up in Cunningham’s absence, filling his role in the starting lineup, and led the Pistons with 30 points and eight assists, achieving 11 of 18 shooting from the field and 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. Jenkins had previously recorded 22 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds in a victory over the Warriors on Friday night.
Duren contributed 20 points, 11 rebounds, and the crucial game-ending defensive play on Dončić, which will not appear in the official statistics.
Dončić topped the Lakers’ scoring with 32 points, adding 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. However, he struggled with his shooting efficiency against the NBA’s second-best defensive rated team, making only 11 of 29 attempts from the field and 3 of 13 from 3-point range.
Austin Reaves tallied 24 points and 5 assists, while James nearly achieved a triple-double with 12 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds.
The Lakers are scheduled to conclude their six-game road trip against the Pacers on Wednesday before returning to Los Angeles for a three-game homestand. The Pistons have upcoming home games against the Hawks and Pelicans on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
