Across France, numerous individuals refer to him as ‘Sir’ Jonny Wilkinson, rather than simply Jonny Wilkinson. The esteemed sports publication L’Equipe bestowed this title upon the English player during the momentous concluding season of his career in 2014.

It’s intriguing to speculate on the subject of their conversation. Perhaps Ramos was recalling the numerous occasions Wilkinson’s formidable kicking proved decisive against Les Bleus.

Among the more striking statistics in Test rugby is the absence of any French athlete within the top thirty highest point-scorers. Both Italy and the Home Nations are present, alongside the four southern hemisphere countries, making France the sole Tier One nation not to have a player listed.

Thomas Ramos is anticipated to enter the top 30 sometime within the upcoming year. He has accumulated 563 points so far, just 88 fewer than Argentina’s Felipe Contepomi, who holds the thirtieth position. No other French athlete has amassed over 500 international points.

In 2016, I spoke with Antony Belleau, then 19 and adapting to life at Toulon. Belleau, Ramos, Jalibert, Romain Ntamack, Melvyn Jaminet, and Antoine Hastoy are all members of what is known as ‘Generation Jonny’. They were in their formative teenage years when the English player dominated the Top 14 league. Ramos first appeared for Toulouse at the senior level in February 2014, at the age of 18, just three months before Wilkinson ceased playing.

Ramos maintains an 84.85 percent success rate for kicks in the Six Nations, placing him second only to Dan Biggar of Wales, who is at 85.44 percent. Merely Jonny Sexton boasts a superior conversion rate from positions wide of the posts, within ten meters of the touchline.

Ramos rejoined Toulouse for the 2017-18 season and has maintained a prominent role in the senior squad consistently since then. By June 2024, he exceeded Jean-Baptiste Elissalde’s 1776 points, establishing himself as the highest point-scorer in the club’s chronicles.

He accomplished this milestone during the Top 14 final’s resounding victory over Bordeaux, contributing 20 points in that game. In the prior year’s fixture against La Rochelle, Ramos accumulated 19 points, and in last year’s triumph over Bordeaux, his total reached 24.

Ramos appears to excel under maximum pressure, a trait he exhibited against England in both 2024 and 2026 by securing the decisive points in the final moments. As a headline in The Times proclaimed last week, Ramos “is the place-kicker upon whom you would wager everything”.

Ramos boasts an 84.85 percent kicking accuracy in the Six Nations tournament, positioning him second only to Wales’ Dan Biggar, who stands at 85.44 percent.
