Tony Cascarino on his “difficult but beautiful” 1994 move from Chelsea to Marseille

By the time Tony Cascarino wrapped up his twelve-year stint in English football and moved to Marseille in 1994, his professional journey had already experienced numerous unexpected shifts.

The Irish international forward was 31 years of age upon arriving in France, and with Marseille navigating a highly unstable period, there were very few who expected him to leave a significant mark.

On the contrary, Cascarino’s two years at the club would breathe new life into his playing days, allowing him to produce some of his finest performances and forge an enduring connection with the Marseille faithful.

Cascarino became a free agent when he departed Chelsea after a fitness-plagued period at Stamford Bridge, during which he managed to score only eight times across two seasons.

His luck quickly turned around, scoring 31 times to help Marseille capture the Ligue 2 championship in the 1994/95 campaign, although the team was blocked from moving up due to active probes into financial misconduct and match-manipulation controversies.

“To describe it as challenging would be putting it mildly,” Cascarino remembers during a conversation with FourFourTwo regarding his adjustment to life in Marseille.

“Yet, it was simultaneously an incredibly wonderful experience. Marseille had lifted the Champions League trophy in 1993 but suffered demotion the following year amid a match-fixing scandal, which ultimately opened up the path for me to join them.

“Fortunately, I was handed a chance to represent a historic club of a stature I never imagined I would ever reach.”

Cascarino fully seized the moment, making sure he reached peak physical condition for his new employers.

“My physical state was exceptional there—I was about six to eight pounds lighter than my usual weight in England,” he adds. “Some people mentioned that I actually looked sick when they ran into me. My cheekbones resembled those of Tour de France riders.”

This enhanced physical conditioning paid off rapidly as he delivered an immediate return on investment for his team, scoring 30 times during the subsequent season to help secure their overdue promotion before transferring elsewhere.

“While I performed remarkably well at Marseille, my spell at Nancy was arguably superior as I was representing a more modest club in the top tier. My scoring rate was so impressive that I was presented with the city’s Medaille d’Or.

“I have constantly maintained that my proudest career achievement was turning my fortunes around at the age of 31, following a succession of physical setbacks at Chelsea, which paved the way for those wonderful seasons in France and allowed me to continue playing until age 38.”
