Only a handful of athletes have successfully generated the level of enthusiasm that 21-year-old WTA sensation Alexandra Eala has sparked in a very short span. While tennis can often feel like an isolating sport for competitors, it transforms into a highly thrilling spectator event when an athlete manages to captivate the crowd with her on-court displays.
The rising star from the Philippines is undoubtedly one of these captivating figures. Her star power was on full display during her championship campaign at the Washington Open, where she captured her most prestigious WTA title to date. Eala has maintained this impressive form at the current Canadian Open, securing victories in her opening couple of matches even while navigating some tough situations on court.
Following her triumphs over American opponents Alycia Parks and Caty McNally, Eala has secured her spot in the round of 16, setting up a clash with the seasoned Belinda Bencic. Nevertheless, serious doubts arose regarding whether the 21-year-old could proceed in the tournament following an apparent injury setback during her showdown with McNally.
What Is the Status of Alexandra Eala’s Injury?
During the second set, Eala took a hard spill and twisted her ankle, which prompted an immediate call for medical assistance. After having her ankle heavily taped, she returned to action and managed to close out a hard-fought three-set win with a score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
The physical setback understandably sparked worry among her expanding base of supporters, but Eala quickly dismissed any major concerns during her post-match media session. The Philippine representative emphasized that she did not consider the knock to be a major issue.
“I twisted my ankle slightly during that second set… I requested the physiotherapist… Fortunately, there is no damage, and it did not turn out to be a major issue.”

Furthermore, Eala acknowledged experiencing physical fatigue following an intense schedule of matches over the last few weeks. This weariness might offer Bencic a minor edge in their upcoming round-of-16 match, particularly given the extensive experience the Swiss veteran possesses.
Even so, Eala has repeatedly demonstrated during her recent performances that she has the grit to overcome adversity. Supported by her ever-increasing legion of fans, the young Philippine player hopes to rise above her exhaustion and deliver another stellar performance to book her place in the Canadian Open quarterfinals.
