Venus Williams Gets US Open Wildcard: Will Serena Join?

In recent times, Venus has enjoyed greater success in doubles, progressing to the quarter-finals in New York last year partnering with Leylah Fernandez of Canada.

Her last singles victory at a major tournament dates back to Wimbledon in 2021, a tournament where she made it to the second round.

Nevertheless, whether playing as a duo or individually, the Williams sisters remain major crowd-pullers, as demonstrated by the sold-out stadiums in Cincinnati during their recent comeback.

Having claimed 23 Grand Slam singles titles, Serena participated in what was anticipated to be her final career tournament in New York in 2022.

Even so, she first made a comeback in doubles at Queen’s during June, prior to receiving the ultimate wildcard spot for the women’s singles at Wimbledon.

Venus secured her inaugural US Open singles championship back in 2000, just two months following her very first major triumph at Wimbledon.

She successfully defended her crown the following year by defeating Serena in the final, marking the opening chapter of nine major championship matches the siblings would play against each other.

By participating in last year’s event, Venus set a record as the oldest competitor to play in the US Open singles draw in 44 years.

After a three-set defeat to the ninth-seeded Karolina Muchova, she held a poignant press conference in which she expressed that it felt “nice to be free”.

Williams was diagnosed in 2011 with Sjogren’s syndrome, a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by symptoms such as physical pain, numbness, and exhaustion.

In 2025, she opened up about how her day-to-day life is affected by uncomfortable fibroids, which are benign growths that form in the uterus.

On the men’s side, French player Gael Monfils has received a wildcard entry for what will be his final Grand Slam appearance.

Additionally, a single wildcard spot is still open in the men’s singles bracket, and it may be given to Stan Wawrinka, the tournament’s 2016 champion.

The Swiss veteran is similarly planning to retire from professional tennis at the conclusion of the season.
