Harry Kane feels he is currently performing at the peak of his career, excelling both as a playmaker and a traditional striker. “Without a doubt, this represents the finest form of my life,” remarked the Bayern Munich and England international, who was honored today with the European Golden Shoe for topping the scoring charts across Europe with 36 league goals.
“The previous campaign speaks volumes—it was unquestionably the highlight of my professional journey.”
Across all matches for Bayern, the forward registered 61 goals and provided seven assists in 51 appearances. When factoring in his international duties with England, his total reached 73 goals over 65 matches.
“A gradual progression”
Kane has consistently risen to the physical battles against central defenders and relishes playing under Vincent Kompany, the legendary Manchester City figure now managing Bayern. “Ever since the manager took over in 2024, he has taken my game up a notch. It comes down to our tactical approach, our patterns in attack and defense, and the license he grants players like myself to drop deep, collect the ball, and make late runs into the penalty area.
“It is a combination of numerous factors. I occupied similar deep-lying roles during my time at Tottenham, particularly after Jose Mourinho’s arrival in 2019. It was a comparable setup: I was given the liberty to drop into midfield, secure possession, and link up. My partnership with Heung-min Son was fantastic. It has been a steady development.

“Surrounded by this squad, alongside such talented teammates, and playing within the manager’s tactical framework, I have truly reached a new level. I feel incredibly at ease out on the pitch, having a clear sense of my positioning and anticipating exactly where my teammates will be.
“I just use my instincts and my freedom to score the goals I score but also dictate the play sometimes in certain games. Each game poses a different test. I’m able to determine what game I need to drop, what game I need to stay high. Last season I got that balance really well.”
The striker minimized speculation about a potential Premier League comeback to surpass Alan Shearer’s historic goal tally of 260, with Kane currently sitting on 213. He is clearly relishing his stint in Munich, where discussions regarding a contract extension for the 33-year-old are already taking place. “When I initially departed Tottenham in 2023, I was convinced I would return to the Premier League at some point. However, that desire has faded significantly.
“I am incredibly content with life in Munich. Moving here has broadened my horizons, introducing me to a completely new footballing culture away from England. It has deepened my admiration for continental football, especially working alongside this squad and manager. My family has adapted wonderfully here. My focus is simply on being in the ideal environment. I would never rule anything out, but my current commitment is entirely to Bayern Munich, and we will see what lies ahead.”
He remains focused on improving even after record-breaking campaigns. “That is the objective. As always, my goal is constant progression. Reaching 73 goals is an incredible milestone that will undoubtedly be tough to surpass. However, given the caliber of players around me and my current physical and mental state, I believe I can challenge those numbers once more.
“The scoring records are the result of intense preparation behind closed doors, putting in the effort daily out of the public eye. It is all about refining those marginal details.”
Upon accepting the accolade, Kane expressed that he takes as much pleasure in executing a sliding challenge as he does in netting a goal. Is that truly the case? “Finding the back of the net is definitely the ultimate rush! The ensuing celebration, the surge of adrenaline, and the sensation of scoring—particularly a decisive match-winner—is unmatched, without question!
“While scoring is the peak sensation, I truly appreciate the multi-faceted nature of my role and the diverse aspects of football. I take pride in tracking back, putting in defensive shifts, and pressing. When analyzing my footage to refine my overall display, I often find myself reviewing those defensive contributions even more than my goals these days.
“I have always taken pride in working hard for the collective group. Seeing my teammates’ reactions to those efforts is incredibly rewarding. It is a significant element of my play style that often gets overlooked because my primary metric is goalscoring. Over the past few seasons, however, observers seem to be noticing and valuing those aspects of my play much more.”
Reflecting on his latest Golden Shoe accolade, Kane described it as “a moment of immense pride, marking my second time winning it.” The ceremony was attended by his family alongside representatives from Bayern. “This particular award carries extra significance given the collective achievements of the squad and the silverware we secured.” While Bayern triumphed in the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, and the German Super Cup, their European campaign ended with a narrow 6-5 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-finals.
“Moving forward, securing the Champions League remains a primary objective for us,” Kane added, effectively dismissing any persistent transfer rumors linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia. “We are competing against the elite clubs of Europe, and with PSG holding back-to-back titles, it presents an immense challenge.
“Arsenal made it to the final, and Real Madrid are always a major threat. The road to becoming European champions requires overcoming numerous world-class opponents. I am excited to face that test once more. Having come agonizingly close to the final last term, our goal this year is to push ourselves over the finish line.”
Kane singled out PSG’s defensive pairing of Marquinhos and Willian Pacho as top-tier talents. “I relish testing myself against the elite because it pushes me to elevate my own performance. Facing PSG meant dealing with formidable opponents in Marquinhos and Pacho. We had intense contests on the pitch, sharing the spoils in our individual battles. PSG’s sustained success in recent seasons is largely down to their presence. They are definitely among the most impressive defenders I’ve faced. While many top-level clubs boast exceptional center-backs, I particularly enjoy testing myself against them.”
He also offered strong words of encouragement to Bayern teammate Jamal Musiala, who experienced two absence seizures during pre-season fixtures. “Jamal is currently navigating a challenging period. He has shared details on social media regarding his diagnosis, and our main priority is to rally behind him. He is an outstanding and highly gifted player who is vital to our squad.
“We feel really sorry for him. We feel frustrated for him when things like that happened in the last couple of games. He knows he has the full support from everyone here at FC Bayern and his friends, his family. We’ll be there to help him deal with it.
“It is a unique challenge that few players have to manage, yet others have successfully overcome similar hurdles in the past. He is dedicated to returning to peak condition. Having recovered from a serious fibula fracture last season, I am well aware of his work ethic in training and rehabilitation.”
For now, Kane remains entirely focused on his club commitments before linking up with the national team next month. He is well-accustomed to the grueling demands of international football. “We have consistently made deep runs in major competitions,” Kane observed, looking back at the recent World Cup as well as past tournaments like Russia 2018, Euro 2020, Qatar 2022, and Euro 2024. “I have adapted well to these short recovery windows.
“In some respects, a packed schedule actually works to my advantage. It allows you to maintain your match sharpness and fitness levels. You establish a continuous rhythm, which is exactly my focus right now. From an England perspective, it was a memorable summer in many respects. Naturally, bowing out in the semi-finals against Argentina was a bitter blow. Nonetheless, securing third place was a vital result for the squad and our supporters. Now, a fresh cycle begins. We start from scratch, preparing for the Nations League fixtures before transitioning into the European Championship qualifiers.
“The prospect of playing the European Championships on home soil in 2028 is a massive driving force. But for the moment, my priority is settling back into club matches, finding my form early on, and contributing goals. Before long, we will regroup for the international fixtures in September, which will feature a slightly altered format of a fortnight-long camp encompassing four matches.
“Our opening match sees us face Spain, the reigning world champions, at Wembley on September 26. It is an exciting fixture to anticipate. We have a lot of summer performances to analyze—identifying our strengths as well as areas needing development—with the ultimate goal of refining our game ahead of the upcoming European Championships.”
