In an effort to secure the final American League wild-card berth, the Seattle Mariners are reportedly promoting left-handed pitcher Kade Anderson, who is widely regarded as the top pitching prospect in baseball.
Drafted third overall by Seattle last season, Anderson is scheduled to make his major league debut on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs, according to a Thursday report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The 22-year-old prospect is just over a year removed from leading LSU to victory in the 2025 Men’s College World Series. During that run, he threw a complete-game shutout in the opening game of the finals, securing the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player honors.
Following a year of rest within the Mariners’ minor league system last season, the gifted lefty has been absolutely dominant for Double-A Arkansas in 2026. Through 18 games with the Travelers, Anderson has thrown 93 1/3 frames, giving up just 11 runs to register a stellar 1.06 ERA. He has racked up 135 strikeouts compared to only 13 walks, holding opposing hitters to a meager .147 batting average.
According to MLB Pipeline, Anderson currently ranks as the fifth-best overall prospect in the game.
Seattle acquired Anderson after a fortunate draft lottery bounce awarded them a top-three pick despite finishing with 85 victories in 2024. Following his selection, the southpaw was given time to rest and reset after carrying a demanding workload for LSU in 2025.
During his debut professional campaign this year, he has continued his pattern of absolute mastery. In just his second outing of the season, Anderson struck out 11 batters over five hitless frames, utilizing a highly efficient 70 pitches.
His arrival strengthens a Seattle starting staff that already boasts Logan Gilbert, Bryan Woo, George Kirby, Bryce Miller, and Emerson Hancock.
Following a 7-4 defeat at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, Seattle’s record slipped to 60-68. While they remain only three games behind the final wild-card spot in the American League, they must leapfrog six other clubs to claim it.
