Should the Arthur Ashe crowd propel the 23-year-old Shelton to his inaugural victory against Alcaraz, a spot for an American in the final match is fully assured.
While domestic competitors have frequently made it to the men’s semi-finals over the last two decades, Taylor Fritz has been the sole player to make the final—doing so two years back prior to his defeat by Jannik Sinner—ever since Roddick fell to Roger Federer in the 2006 title match.
Seeded 11th, Tiafoe was defeated by Fritz in an all-American semifinal clash, and he met a similar fate when Alcaraz knocked him out at that exact point of the tournament in 2022.
At 28 years old, he is currently striving for a third shot at securing his place in a maiden Grand Slam final.

Currently ranked 46th globally, Michelsen concedes that he has preferred staying out of the spotlight at Flushing Meadows while peers like Tiafoe, Shelton, Fritz, and Tommy Paul command the public’s focus.
Nevertheless, securing a debut appearance in a major quarter-final without losing a single set along the way ensures that Michelsen will now be the center of attention on the Ashe court.
“Whether it’s the first, second, or third round, I get anxious before every match. That is just part of being human,” he explained.
“However, it ultimately comes down to stepping onto the court and handling those emotions as effectively as possible. I believe I have done a great job of that so far.”
