If Shea Charles experiences any pressure from holding the title of Northern Ireland’s most costly footballer, his calm attitude certainly does not show it.
Speaking with BBC Sport NI ahead of the upcoming series of four Nations League fixtures, the Fulham midfielder comes across as relaxed yet highly focused, eager to contribute significantly as a youthful Northern Ireland squad looks to maintain their upward trajectory.
The midfielder’s historic £30 million transfer from Championship outfit Southampton to the London club during the summer window offered him a step up into top-flight football in the Premier League.
He characterizes his status as Northern Ireland’s most valuable player as “rather surreal.”
“Previously, I believe I ranked second or third. However, taking the top spot is fantastic. Simply competing in the Premier League and playing the game I love is an incredible experience,” he remarked to Stephen Watson of BBC Sport NI.
“Personally, I try not to dwell on the valuation, especially when you observe the massive fees being paid for players in the modern game; it is somewhat unbelievable.
“I am fortunate to have an excellent support system around me, sharing a home with my brothers and my parents. My close-knit circle of friends also helps me stay humble.”
For the next few weeks, the 22-year-old will shift his focus from domestic duties to the international arena, with Michael O’Neill’s squad scheduled to play doubleheaders against Georgia, alongside matches with Hungary and Ukraine.
With 35 international appearances under his belt since his first outing in June 2022, Charles highlights how representing his country has played a vital role in elevating his professional growth and refining his skills.
“Playing for my country has been immensely important to me from day one—the caliber of opponents and teams we face is something you seldom experience while competing in the Championship.
“Testing yourself against top-tier talent was always bound to accelerate my development.
“I believe Michael [O’Neill] showed immense faith in me from the very beginning, giving me a starting spot whenever possible, for which I am incredibly grateful.
“Michael has entrusted me with extra leadership duties, including captaining the side on occasion, so I strive to lead by example both on and off the field, acting as a role model for the younger squad members.”
Returning to the Top Flight was the Goal
Charles has featured in every one of Fulham’s five top-flight matches during the current campaign, earning a place in the starting lineup for three of them, which included hard-fought draws with Liverpool and Manchester United.
Alvaro Arbeloa’s team currently occupy the 19th spot in the standings, having recorded two draws alongside three losses so far.
“Our objective was always to secure a place back in the Premier League, whether that happened with Southampton or through a transfer.
“It is a thrilling opportunity and my integration has been seamless. The club is fantastic, and my initial conversations with the head coach showed that we share the same footballing philosophy.
“The match against Manchester United was superb, and we were unfortunate not to walk away with all three points. Getting to participate in such a massive fixture so soon after arriving was wonderful.”
His sibling Pierce, a goalkeeper who joined Queen’s Park Rangers on a temporary deal from Manchester City in the summer, is likewise a key figure in the national setup.
“Sharing the pitch with your brother at the international level is the kind of thing you dream about. Standing alongside him while competing against world-class nations like France and Italy is an amazing feeling.
“Our bond is incredibly tight; we grew up playing the sport together and have always been closest friends.”
‘I can see my mother’s immense pride’

Born in England, Charles is eligible to represent Northern Ireland via his mother, who closely monitors her children’s sporting journeys.
“She is incredibly proud, and it is completely obvious when you spot her among the supporters, particularly at Windsor Park.
“Her joy for what we have accomplished is clear, and having both of us sharing the field together is truly marvelous.
“I do not think she has missed a single home game at Windsor Park recently. She attends constantly, even traveling to Italy, and does her best to support us at every away venue possible.
“Pierce and I made a promise to her during our childhood that we would represent Northern Ireland, and we have certainly kept that commitment.”
Charles maintains that the squad “undoubtedly possesses the capability” to “demonstrate our true quality.”
“We have a very unified squad where everyone interacts well. Each time a new player is introduced, they seem to integrate seamlessly.
“Seeing fresh faces like Ceadach [O’Neill] and Braiden [Graham] join the squad makes you realize you are getting a bit older yourself. It really is an excellent collection of players.”
