It appears highly probable that the Los Angeles Rams will miss wide receiver Puka Nacua for a second consecutive week, as his status is listed as doubtful for the upcoming Sunday night clash against the Denver Broncos.
Speaking to ESPN Los Angeles earlier in the week, head coach Sean McVay indicated that Nacua’s recovery from the groin discomfort that sidelined him during the Rams’ Monday night victory against the New York Giants is “not making great progress.”
McVay clarified that the setback is not expected to be a long-term issue, noting that the franchise is simply exercising a high degree of caution.
McVay explained that for skill-position players who need to reach top speeds and stretch the field, sensations similar to a pre-hernia can be particularly troublesome. Consequently, the team is choosing to be safe. He pointed out that rest is generally the most effective remedy for this type of ailment, and once a certain recovery threshold is reached, optimism about returning increases.
During his Friday press session, McVay remarked that, assuming there are no further complications, they anticipate Nacua’s return in Week 4 for their game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
This current physical issue is completely distinct from the psoas problem that kept him sidelined during the summer training sessions. He was fit enough to participate in the season opener in Australia, where the Rams fell to the San Francisco 49ers. In that contest, Nacua brought in five receptions on nine targets, totaling 74 yards.
The wideout has sat out of practice throughout the week, though McVay confirmed that the organization has no plans to place him on the injured reserve list.
McVay emphasized that while everyone desires Nacua’s presence on the field, the priority is ensuring he is fully capable of performing at his peak rather than merely playing through pain.
