Reports suggest that 47-year-old Mikkel Kessler is contemplating a return to boxing, over 13 years following his final bout and nearly a decade after a previous comeback effort fell through before he could step back inside the ropes.
According to the Danish publication Ekstra Bladet, November 28 has emerged as a potential date for an event promoted by Kalle Sauerland, which may take place at the Brøndby Hallen. Danish boxing site Knock-Out reports that an unspecified American fighter is in the frame as a potential opponent, though these arrangements remain unverified by both Sauerland and Kessler’s representatives.
Back in 2017, a 38-year-old Kessler declared his intention to fight again, only for his training camp to be derailed by a battle with Lyme disease. Recalling his struggles with the ailment, he stated:
“I felt completely exhausted, my muscles were constantly aching, and training was simply out of the question.”
Ultimately, that planned comeback failed to materialize into an actual matchup. Consequently, his points defeat against Carl Froch in 2013 stands as his most recent professional bout.
While that past health issue does not reflect his current physical state, it highlights just how long he has harbored the desire to return. Now, Kessler is pursuing this goal after spending an additional nine years away from competitive boxing.
Additionally, his previous eye issues warrant consideration. In 2010, a double-vision injury compelled him to withdraw from the Super Six tournament. Although he did fight again after that incident—meaning it does not rule out his current medical eligibility—any new professional campaign would require a fresh, thorough medical evaluation.
Showcasing a beloved Danish champion in front of a supportive local audience clearly makes sense from a business perspective. However, the athletic merit of such an event remains difficult to evaluate until details regarding his opponent and the nature of the contest are officially released.
Throughout his career, Kessler relied on precise timing and distance control to deliver his sharp jab and combinations. Should he struggle to manage that range against a sharp, active rival, his classic technical skills will not provide much of a shield.
Organizing an exhibition bout with a fellow veteran would be a marketing exercise in nostalgia. Conversely, a fully sanctioned professional match would raise far more serious concerns regarding his physical readiness and the caliber of his opponent.
Facing a handpicked rival designed to guarantee an easy victory would demonstrate very little. On the other hand, an opponent who can actually push Kessler would immediately reveal the toll that such a lengthy hiatus has taken on his abilities.
