Making a triumphant comeback to the WTA Tour following a nearly six-month injury layoff, Great Britain’s Sonay Kartal defeated Andrea Lazaro Garcia at the China Open.
A lower back issue sustained during March’s Indian Wells tournament kept the 24-year-old sidelined until she finally made her competitive comeback at the Billie Jean King Cup on September 22.
Following a tight defeat to Czech world number 26 Marie Bouzkova during her comeback match last week, Kartal delivered an assured display in Beijing to dispatch Spain’s Lazaro Garcia in straight sets, 6-2 6-3.
The British player secured five service breaks against the qualifier, capitalized on four double faults by her opponent, and successfully put 69% of her first serves into play.
Currently ranked 129th globally, Kartal is scheduled to meet the 31st-seeded Chinese player Wang Xinyu in the subsequent round as she aims to climb back up the rankings.
In other action, her compatriot Cameron Norrie was beaten 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 by reigning US Open champion and world number two Alexander Zverev, with Harriet Dart scheduled to play later this Thursday.
In Japan, Britain’s top-ranked Arthur Fery suffered a 6-4 3-6 6-4 opening-round defeat at the Japan Open to Portuguese lucky loser Jaime Faria.
Titleholder Carlos Alcaraz shook off some competitive rust to secure a 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 6-1 victory against Alex Michelsen upon making his comeback to the ATP Tour.
The third-ranked Spaniard had spent slightly more than five months out of action due to a wrist issue prior to his comeback at the US Open, where he managed a quarter-final run.
Alcaraz found it difficult to hold serve consistently against Michelsen, registering five double faults alongside his five aces.
Nevertheless, he successfully defended five of the 13 break opportunities he gave up to progress and book a second-round clash with Italian Matteo Arnaldi.
Meanwhile, Danish player Holger Rune also suffered a loss in what was his initial ATP Tour match in nearly twelve months.
Rune, previously ranked fourth in the world, ruptured his Achilles tendon in October 2025 and has consequently slipped outside of the world’s top 100 players.
His run in Tokyo was cut short following a 6-3 6-1 defeat at the hands of Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet.
