Kartal Wins Again in Impressive Comeback

British tennis player Sonay Kartal sustained her remarkable return from a lengthy layoff by securing a decisive victory against past Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini, advancing to the quarter-finals at the Wuhan Open.

The 24-year-old Kartal was sidelined for over half a year due to a back stress fracture, yet she has claimed victory in five out of seven contests following her competitive comeback.

The ex-world number 50 comfortably dispatched the 15th-seeded Italian Paolini with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 scoreline, proving the success of her measured strategy in overcoming her career’s inaugural major physical setback.

This emphatic display by Kartal built upon her impressive straight-sets success against ninth seed Belinda Bencic in the prior stage.

“When facing an opponent of Jasmine’s caliber, I was aware that I needed to remain steadfast right from the beginning and keep the pressure on. On my end, it felt like an almost immaculate display,” remarked Kartal.

Earlier in the year, Kartal enjoyed tremendous momentum, attaining her highest-ever world ranking, advancing to two WTA quarter-finals, and securing significant wins against elite players.

Triumphs against 2025 Australian Open winner Madison Keys and former world number eight Emma Navarro at Indian Wells set up a fourth-round encounter with current world number one Elena Rybakina.

Unfortunately, Kartal had to withdraw because of her back condition, which turned out to be far more severe than initially anticipated.

Though she originally anticipated a rapid healing process, the intense discomfort eventually made simple tasks like brushing her teeth “excruciating,” forcing her to make tough choices.

Opting out of Wimbledon was an especially painful decision, considering her run to the fourth round at her home Grand Slam in 2025, yet accepting that her return could not be hurried has ultimately proven to be a smart move.

Her return to competition slightly more than three weeks back—playing for Great Britain in the BJK Cup—resulted in a tight loss, after which she captured two victories to advance to the third round in Beijing during her WTA Tour comeback.

Competing under a protected injury ranking, Kartal brought that positive drive into her campaign in Wuhan.

She remains undefeated in sets throughout her triumphs over Ukrainian world number 48 Anhelina Kalinina, 2020 Olympic gold medalist Bencic, and two-time Grand Slam finalist Paolini.

Kartal sustained exceptional performance from behind the baseline while Paolini struggled, making a string of unforced errors.

In the quarter-finals, Kartal is set to face Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina, who has reached four Grand Slam semi-finals.
