CBS Sports officially announced on Thursday that J.J. Watt is now their lead NFL game analyst. The network confirmed that Watt will continue to commentate games alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson, including the Super Bowl scheduled for next season.
This promotion is accompanied by a multi-year contract renewal for Watt. CBS Sports has not disclosed the financial specifics of this agreement.
In a statement, Watt expressed his deep appreciation for the opportunity.
“I am deeply honored and grateful to have the chance to represent CBS Sports and all the incredible individuals who contribute to making this place unique,” stated Watt. “From the camaraderie of THE NFL TODAY to my teammates in the booth, I couldn’t wish for better partners on this television adventure. I am thankful to David Berson for his leadership, vision, and trust. I am passionate about this role and eagerly anticipate seeing you on Sundays with Jim and Tracy, along with many more Sundays ahead!”
The timing of Watt’s promotion is notable, as it follows CBS Sports’ separation from former lead NFL analyst Tony Romo, who was apprehended in July on charges of suspected intoxicated operation of a vehicle.
After that incident, Romo was swiftly put on leave by the network. With Romo’s future uncertain as the NFL season neared, CBS opted for Watt to partner with Nantz and Wolfson in the network’s primary broadcasting crew. CBS’s decision to part ways with Romo in early October further cemented Watt’s role as the leading play-by-play commentator for the network.
After concluding a Hall of Fame-worthy career, Watt retired following the 2022 NFL season and transitioned into broadcasting. He has quickly ascended in this new field, securing the top role at CBS after only a few seasons.
As a broadcaster, Watt is recognized for his rigorous preparation, a quality that contributed to his success as a phenomenal pass rusher during his playing career.
