Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry Join Boston Common in First TGL Trade

With TGL preparing to launch its third season this winter, the league saw its inaugural player trade take place on Monday as Boston Common acquired Shane Lowry from The Bay Golf Club.

To secure Lowry, Boston sent The Bay its fourth pick in the upcoming roster formation process (serving as the TGL Draft), in addition to the right to exchange a future selection with Boston during any of the next three offseasons. The Bay will likewise acquire “commercial considerations” for trading Lowry to Boston, where he reunites with his close friend Rory McIlroy.

Following the move, both Lowry and McIlroy shared statements emphasizing their past achievements as a team, notably winning the PGA Tour’s only team tournament, the Zurich Classic, in 2024.

“I am thrilled to be coming aboard at Boston Common Golf. Teaming up with Rory again as part of this roster is especially exciting, and I am eager to play my part in bringing a title home to Boston,” Lowry stated.

“Shane is a fantastic friend and a player I thoroughly enjoy competing with in team events,” McIlroy remarked. “We have celebrated some remarkable victories together, like the Zurich Classic, and I know how high his level of play is along with how deeply he values winning for his squad. I am overjoyed to welcome him to Boston Common Golf and thrilled about what we can accomplish as a team this year.”

The duo also gathered 1.5 points across two team matches at the 2025 Ryder Cup, aiding Europe in securing a victory on American soil — with Lowry holing the championship-clinching putt in Sunday’s singles matches.

This blockbuster trade comes during a significant expansion year for TGL. Every squad’s lineup will expand to five golfers starting in the 2027 season, while the league debuts a seventh club, Motor City Golf Club, led by Brooks Koepka and Jackson Koivun.

Full roster details for the 2027 TGL season are scheduled to be revealed on Tuesday.
