Wayne Rooney has offered his thoughts on the ongoing controversy surrounding Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes following the midfielder’s vocal criticism of manager Michael Carrick.

A humbling 4-1 defeat at the hands of Como in Wednesday’s Champions League clash leaves the Red Devils with a dismal record of merely two victories across their opening 11 games of the 2026/27 campaign. Although Carrick earned the full-time managerial position by clinching European qualification for the club, heat is rapidly building on his position.

In his post-game media duties, Fernandes openly questioned the team’s strategic setup, igniting a dispute that looks set to drag on for weeks.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Fernandes stated: “The coaching team chose not to employ a man-marking press, opting instead to allow space in behind while attempting to recover possession. However, handing prolonged periods of control to opponents like this only builds their self-belief.”

“Identifying those adjustments lies with the head coach and his backroom team, not myself. In high-pressure moments, you need greater courage—taking the gamble to press further up the pitch and disrupt their tempo.”

In response, Carrick pointed toward a deficit in squad effort, while commentator Joe Cole swiftly berated Fernandes for publicly exposing internal team conflict.

Ex-United midfield general Roy Keane likewise highlighted Fernandes’ statements as an unwelcome distraction rather than constructive feedback, prompting Rooney to challenge both the team leader and his fellow squad members.

“Back when [Lisandro] Martinez publicly expressed his dissatisfaction [regarding Jason Wilcox], I warned it would create chaos inside the locker room, and that was just the beginning. Now we are witnessing the exact same pattern with Bruno, and it will keep spreading to other players who refuse to be held accountable,” Rooney explained during an interview on The United Stand.

“Regardless of whether Bruno’s critique holds merit, accountability belongs on the field—the entire squad must own their performances. The current group behaves selfishly. They demonstrate little concern for their colleagues, the technical team, or the supporters.

“Their sole focus is self-interest. The moment circumstances stop favoring them, they throw tantrums like children, shifting blame onto everybody else rather than taking ownership.”

Manchester United’s lone triumphs during this campaign came against top-flight newcomers Ipswich Town and Azerbaijani titleholders Sabah in European competition.

They are currently enduring a seven-game winless streak across all tournaments, having suffered back-to-back Champions League defeats at the hands of Atletico Madrid and Como. Furthermore, the club has yet to register an away victory since Carrick assumed the managerial role permanently.

The Red Devils return to action at Old Trafford against Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon, before traveling to Stamford Bridge for an early Premier League encounter against Chelsea the following Saturday.
