Week 8 of college football lacked the frenzy seen in the previous week’s games, but it nonetheless offered its own share of surprises and upsets.
On Friday evening, the first significant coaching dismissal in the FBS occurred, as NC State parted ways with veteran head coach Dave Doeren on Saturday after the Wolfpack’s 31-28 defeat on the road against Stanford. Here’s Bill Bender discussing the leading candidates to step into the vacant role.
During the early games on Saturday, Indiana managed a tough overtime victory against Michigan while Miami dominated Pitt 52-23, highlighted by a stellar performance from Canes receiver Malachi Toney. The Big 12 struggled that day, seeing top-ranked teams BYU and Texas Tech falter against UCF and Cincinnati, respectively. BYU’s loss to the Knights was particularly dramatic, as a dubious roughing the kicker penalty contributed to UCF’s surprising win.
USC incurred its second loss of the season, falling 24-7 to unranked Wisconsin away from home. Tennessee also suffered a loss in a road game, falling 27-24 to South Carolina. Additionally, in the SEC, Texas, along with Arch Manning, narrowly escaped a strong second-half surge from Trinidad Chambliss and Ole Miss, securing a 34-27 victory. Currently, there are an astounding seven two-loss teams in the SEC, all capable of making their case for the CFP as the season heads into its final stretch.
With Week 8 completed, let’s examine the current standings reflected in the most recent rankings.
