Adebayo Exits Early with Foot Injury in Loss

DENVER — The Miami Heat’s Bam Adebayo signaled to the bench that he needed to come out of Wednesday night’s contest against the Denver Nuggets as the opening quarter drew to a close, citing discomfort in his left foot.

He did not return to the game.

The Heat noticeably felt the absence of their versatile forward/center, particularly in the interior, as the Nikola Jokic-led Nuggets asserted their dominance on the boards, ultimately securing a 122-112 victory.

Adebayo is scheduled to undergo a series of examinations on his injured foot this Thursday. He was observed walking with a noticeable limp following the game’s conclusion.

“We’ll get to the bottom of it,” Adebayo commented.

With Adebayo unavailable, the Nuggets capitalized on the situation.

More precisely, Jokic, who amassed an impressive stat line of 33 points, 16 assists, and 15 rebounds, recording his fifth triple-double performance of the current season. The Heat were significantly outmatched in rebounding, trailing by a margin of 61-38, with a particularly stark contrast on the offensive end, where they were outdone 21-5. Denver’s total of 61 rebounds represented their highest figure since May 5, 2021.

“It’s definitely a setback,” Heat guard Norman Powell stated regarding Adebayo’s early exit. “I felt like we established a solid rhythm right from the start, displaying good fluidity, energy, and enthusiasm. We were securing stops and grabbing rebounds. He was putting up a fight. I didn’t witness the specific incident, but it undoubtedly had an impact.”

Adebayo boasts three All-Star selections and five All-Defensive team honors throughout his career. Leading up to Wednesday’s game, he maintained averages of 22.4 points and 9.1 rebounds.

“I hold him in high regard,” Jokic acknowledged, having shot 12-of-18 from the field. “He consistently gives his all on every possession — sometimes even exceeding that level. They clearly missed his presence on both ends of the court.”

The Heat held a three-point advantage — with an additional free throw pending — at the moment Adebayo left the game with 3:48 remaining in the first quarter. Subsequently, the Nuggets gradually took control, extending their lead to as much as 17 points in the fourth quarter. Miami mounted a late comeback attempt, but Jamal Murray ultimately sealed the victory for Denver at the free throw line.

“There are numerous instances throughout the game, pivotal junctures, that we failed to navigate effectively,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra remarked, whose team concluded their four-game road trip with a 1-3 record. “Each time we narrowed the deficit to around six or eight points, they responded decisively, ultimately pushing the lead back to 15 points. However, this is part of our learning process. Even without Bam, I believed we were capable of positioning ourselves to secure a win.”
