According to statistics compiled by the data analytics company Signify, along with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), approximately 8,000 offensive, aggressive, or intimidating communications were publicly directed at 458 athletes in the tennis community via their social media profiles during 2024, with a significant portion originating from gambling-related grievances.
Aiava mentioned enduring “expressions of animosity or explicit threats of violence” and remarks concerning “my physical appearance, my professional trajectory, or any minor detail they choose to scrutinize”.
She further expressed disapproval of “an athletic pursuit that conceals itself behind ostensible refined and courteous principles”.
Aiava further stated, “Beneath the conventional white attire and time-honored customs lies an environment characterized by prejudice against race, gender, and sexual orientation, demonstrating antagonism towards individuals who deviate from established norms.”
Moreover, she conveyed appreciation for the chance to explore various countries and form connections, yet confessed: “It simultaneously exacted a toll. My perception of my physical form. My well-being. My familial bonds. My intrinsic value.
“Should I repeat this entire experience? I genuinely lack certainty, but a key lesson gleaned from this sport is the perpetual availability of an opportunity for a renewed beginning.”
As of now, representatives from the tennis governing bodies have refrained from issuing any statements regarding Aiava’s online publication.
