Aleksander Barkov: Panthers Captain Out 7-9 Months After Knee Surgeries

The Florida Panthers’ quest for a three-peat may face a significant hurdle, as they are likely to be without their captain for the entirety of the regular season, and potentially the postseason as well.

The Panthers disclosed on Friday that Aleksander Barkov had surgery to address ACL and MCL injuries, with an expected recovery period of seven to nine months. A seven-month timeline would place Barkov’s return around late April, coinciding with the commencement of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The injury also puts Barkov’s participation in the 2026 Winter Olympics for his home country of Finland in jeopardy.

Barkov sustained the injury during a practice session on Thursday, when he fell awkwardly into a defensive player and had to be assisted off the ice.

Panthers head coach Paul Maurice openly acknowledged the impact of Barkov’s absence on the team:

There’s no sugarcoating it. It’s a void. He’s the linchpin. He occupies such a crucial space in that locker room. I anticipate we’ll witness the emergence of other leaders within our team now.

“While the notion of ‘next man up’ exists, there’s no direct replacement for Barky. We need to collectively fill that role… We’re allowed one day of disappointment. Starting tomorrow, I want everyone to be optimistic.”

Undeniably, Barkov has been an essential contributor to the Panthers’ two championship victories in recent seasons, consistently achieving at least 20 goals and 50 assists each season, while also securing his second and third Selke Trophies as the forward with the most defensive prowess. At the age of 30, he holds the franchise records for games played (804), goals (286), assists (496), points (782), and game-winning goals (52) after a 12-season tenure.

Bookmakers are evidently less optimistic about the Panthers’ ability to overcome this setback, as the team’s odds shifted from a league-leading +600 earlier in the week to +1000 on Friday, placing them in a tie for fifth.

The Panthers are already contending with the absence of another All-Star player, Matthew Tkachuk, who underwent surgery for a torn adductor muscle and sports hernia the previous month and will be sidelined at the beginning of the season. ESPN reports that the Panthers have played without both Barkov and Tkachuk in just five games since Tkachuk joined the team in 2022.

Florida’s preseason is scheduled to begin on Monday, with their season opener against the Chicago Blackhawks on October 7.
