Amanda Anisimova demonstrated a remarkable performance on this occasion.
Anisimova, seeded No. 8, showcased significant improvement compared to her previous encounter with Iga Świątek at the Wimbledon final earlier in the summer. On Wednesday afternoon at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the American secured a 6-4, 6-3 victory to advance to the semifinals of the US Open, marking a considerable turnaround within a few months.
This triumph marks her third victory over a top-five opponent in a major championship. Anisimova will now compete against either No. 11 Karolína Muchová or No. 23 Naomi Osaka in the semifinals on Thursday. Osaka had previously defeated Coco Gauff in straight sets during her fourth-round match on Monday to secure her spot in the quarterfinals. Jessica Pegula is another American player remaining in the women’s tournament and will face top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in her semifinals match.
Świątek had completely outplayed Anisimova at the Wimbledon final in June, achieving a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory to claim her sixth major championship and first Wimbledon title. This victory, completed in under an hour, also made her the first Polish woman to win Wimbledon in the tournament’s history.
However, Anisimova overcame any difficulties she faced in that previous match. She matched Świątek’s pace in the first set before ultimately taking the lead and securing the early win. She also forced several errors from Świątek in the final game, keeping her on the defensive throughout.
Świątek briefly regained momentum at the beginning of the second set, taking a 2-0 lead after winning eight of the first nine points. However, Anisimova quickly recovered, tying the match and then taking a 3-2 lead after an impressive rally that stunned Świątek.
From that point on, Świątek appeared fatigued on the court, making seven unforced errors in the second set alone. Anisimova capitalized on this and secured her upset victory, advancing to the semifinals.
Anisimova entered the tournament ranked No. 9 globally. This marks her best performance at the US Open so far, securing her third semifinals appearance at a Grand Slam in her career. Świątek, in contrast, will miss the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the first time this season, having previously reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and the French Open before her Wimbledon victory.
Townsend, Siniaková Reach Finals
Although not as straightforward as their previous match, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniaková have advanced to the US Open women’s doubles final.
The top-ranked doubles team in the competition secured a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens in their semifinal match on Wednesday afternoon. They will now proceed to the finals to compete against Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe for the championship.
Townsend, who was involved in a contentious exchange during her third-round singles match, narrowly missed defeating Barbora Krejčíková in the fourth round. Krejčíková survived an extended tiebreak in the second set and ultimately secured the win, eliminating Townsend.
Townsend has only reached the finals at the US Open once before, but she and her partner were defeated in 2022. Townsend and Siniaková were defeated in the semifinals in New York last year.
