The day following the Indianapolis Colts’ declaration that Daniel Jones had secured the role of the team’s primary quarterback, sidelining Anthony Richardson, the fourth overall selection in the 2023 draft, Colts quarterbacks mentor Cam Turner remained uncertain when questioned about whether Richardson had let down the Colts or if the organization had failed him. Turner navigated a precarious position, ultimately refraining from issuing a clear statement regarding where the responsibility lay, or if it should be shared.
“As someone who coaches the quarterbacks, naturally, you hope to see your players do well and achieve success,” Turner expressed to journalists in Indianapolis on Wednesday. “I believe I’ve explored every avenue possible, and I also believe he’s put in a great deal of effort in that regard. I don’t believe it’s solely one or the other. I just think that at this moment, the level of consistency isn’t quite where we aspire for it to be.”
Richardson’s loss in the Colts’ quarterback competition, despite his high draft status, has brought attention to his limited progress over the previous two years. His impressive physical skills from his time at the University of Florida have not consistently translated into on-field success at the NFL level. While injuries have posed a challenge for Richardson, his passing abilities have also been a concern. He has only completed 50.6% of his pass attempts, including 47.7% in 11 games during the previous year. His physical form and commitment to improvement have also faced scrutiny.
Selecting Richardson with the fourth pick had been central to the strategy of Colts coach Shane Steichen and his team as they entered their third year in Indianapolis. Their goal was to rebuild the Colts into a winning team and establish a stable quarterback situation, something the franchise had lacked since Andrew Luck’s early retirement due to injuries. Instead, the team is now shifting its focus to Jones, the former Giants quarterback who signed a one-year contract with the team, aiming to revitalize his career after his own injury setbacks.

During his time with the Giants, Jones was recognized for his professionalism and dedication, qualities that ultimately contributed to the team’s first playoff victory since Super Bowl XLVI. When discussing Jones, Turner commended the Colts’ starting quarterback for his decision-making abilities and the consistency he has demonstrated in understanding and executing the team’s offensive plays.
“The football arrives accurately at the intended location and time, which he has shown throughout the spring practices, OTAs, and training camp,” Turner stated. “It’s all about consistency. You have a clear understanding of what to expect, you trust his choices, and his precision has been consistently strong.”
Steichen also emphasized “consistency” as a crucial element when he announced the decision to begin the season with Jones.
“You’ve heard me mention the importance of consistency, and that’s precisely what I was evaluating,” Steichen explained on Tuesday. “Specifically, I was looking at the efficiency at the line of scrimmage, the accuracy of checks, the security of protections, the quality of ball placement, and the completion rate. All of these factors played a role in the decision. I believe Daniel has performed exceptionally well in these aspects, and while [Richardson] has shown progress in these areas, I feel he still needs further development.”
