During the beginning of December, Draper, who ranks tenth globally, withdrew from the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) grand final event held in London, attributing his decision to a feeling of not being “fully prepared”.
Draper initially experienced an uncomfortable sensation in his upper left arm, which he uses for serving, during the spring’s clay-court season. Although he made an effort to compete again at the US Open in late August – participating with Jessica Pegula in mixed doubles and securing a victory in his initial singles match – he subsequently pulled out of the competition due to the persisting discomfort.
He proceeded to explain: “Clearly, given that the Australian competition is a Grand Slam event, it stands as one of the most significant tournaments within professional tennis.
“Nonetheless, this particular injury has affected me for an extended period. I am currently in the absolute final phases of the recuperation journey, and resuming competitive play in best-of-five-set tennis so quickly does not appear to be a judicious choice for my well-being or my future in the sport at this moment.”
“While I have certainly encountered numerous obstacles, this specific setback has proven to be, by a considerable margin, the most arduous, demanding, and intricate one I have ever experienced.”
Draper showcased impressive form during the initial segment of the year, ascending to a personal best global ranking of fourth in June and additionally clinching his first Masters 1000 championship by defeating Holger Rune of Denmark in the Indian Wells final during March.
