La Liga giants Barcelona are reportedly considering a transfer bid for Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres.
The Swedish forward completed a move to north London from Sporting Lisbon during the previous summer window, in a deal worth an initial £55 million plus an additional £8.5 million in add-ons.
However, merely twelve months into his five-year agreement, the striker’s long-term position at the Emirates Stadium appears highly uncertain.
Barcelona set sights on Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres
After finishing as Premier League runners-up for three successive seasons, and experiencing a noticeable decline in goals during the 2024/25 campaign, many Arsenal supporters urged the hierarchy to secure a high-profile frontman like Gyokeres.
Yet, despite discovering his goalscoring touch, the Sweden international saw his starting role diminish, frequently featuring as a substitute once Kai Havertz returned to full fitness in March.
Mikel Arteta has regularly favored Havertz over Gyokeres in high-stakes matches since the German’s return, a tactical decision that has consistently paid off.
The Germany international justified his selection by netting a crucial goal in a pivotal clash with Manchester City back in April.
Havertz was subsequently named in the starting XI for the Champions League final against PSG, opening the scoring before Gyokeres was introduced in the 66th minute. Arteta once again selected Havertz to lead the line for Sunday’s Community Shield opener against Manchester City.
Following his return from the World Cup, the forward has struggled to make an impact during warm-up fixtures, attracting scrutiny for his heavy touches and wasteful finishing—though pre-season performances should always be taken with a pinch of salt.
According to reports from El Chiringuito, Barcelona may offer the Swede an opportunity to secure regular first-team football once again.
After facing obstacles in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez, the Catalan club are believed to be turning their attention elsewhere.
Gyokeres is reportedly on their shortlist, and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano suggests that while no formal bid has been submitted to Arsenal yet, negotiations could accelerate before the window closes.
The transfer market in both Spain and England is set to conclude at 11pm UK time on Tuesday, September 1.
