Audi Poaches Verstappen’s Mechanic from Red Bull F1.

Information suggests that Matt Caller, who is currently the main mechanic for Max Verstappen at Red Bull, will be incorporated into Audi’s Formula 1 project as the current racing season concludes.

The strategies for Audi’s entry into F1 are gradually solidifying. Significant effort is being applied behind the scenes as the company prepares to join the highest tier of motorsport in 2026, taking over the Sauber group officially.

In recent weeks, Audi has welcomed Wolf Zimmermann and ICE expert Lars Schmidt, both of whom previously worked at Ferrari. This development isn’t surprising, considering their established working relationship with Mattia Binotto at the Italian team, and Binotto is now serving as COO and CTO at Audi.

In operational terms, the existing Sauber team is also aiming to progress under the guidance of Jonathan Wheatley, who dedicated numerous years as Red Bull’s sporting director. This connection to Red Bull explains a personnel change that has come to light during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend.

Sources indicate that Audi is enhancing its team by securing Caller, who currently holds the position of Verstappen’s main mechanic at Red Bull.

It is expected that Caller will conclude the current F1 season with the team led by Laurent Mekies, after which he will transition to Audi.

Caller became a member of Red Bull in June 2015, following a period with Carlin, initially serving as a number 2 mechanic. He was later promoted to the head mechanic position in 2022.

The specific role Caller will take on at Audi has not yet been revealed, although indications suggest that it will be a more advanced position than his current role at Red Bull.

Caller is not the first mechanic to transition from Red Bull to the Audi project; Lee Stevenson previously made the same move and now holds a high-ranking position within the Hinwil-based organization. Caller’s twin brother, Jon, is also employed by Red Bull, serving as the head mechanic for Yuki Tsunoda’s side of the garage.
