Badgers QB Edwards Injured, Exits Game

Billy Edwards Jr., Wisconsin’s starting quarterback who transferred from Maryland, was sidelined during Thursday’s 17-0 victory at home versus Miami (Ohio) after sustaining a lower-body injury in the initial half.

Edwards was hurt during a play where there was no contact in the second quarter; after handing off the ball, he began to run. His left leg seemed to give way, and he collapsed. Edwards, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 228 pounds, was examined in Wisconsin’s medical tent before heading to the locker room.

He wasn’t wearing his uniform on the Badgers’ sideline during the latter part of the game. Danny O’Neil, who transferred from San Diego State, took his place.

When asked about Edwards’ condition post-game, Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell commented to the Big Ten Network: “I don’t know anything at this moment, but he’s out here with us, which is encouraging.”

Wisconsin aggressively recruited Edwards during the offseason. He started 11 games for Maryland last year, ranking second in the Big Ten in passing yards average (261.9 ypg) and fourth in completions (273). He was named the 2023 Music City Bowl MVP, leading Maryland to a victory over Auburn.

Edwards started his collegiate journey at Wake Forest before moving to Maryland in 2022.

In 2024, the Badgers’ quarterback, Tyler Van Dyke, who had transferred from Miami, was lost due to a torn ACL sustained in Week 3 against Alabama.
