Leeds United said goodbye to their longtime center forward, Patrick Bamford, in the recent transfer period. The team decided to separate ways with the seasoned player because the first-team manager, Daniel Farke, believed he was no longer needed.
Reports from Spain suggest that Bamford, now 32, is very near to finalizing a move to Getafe in LaLiga.
It is understood that the club from Madrid has presented the attacker with a contract. It’s prepared for him to sign once he passes his medical examination.
Patrick Bamford possibly making LaLiga shift, reports suggest
Bamford played for Leeds for seven years, netting 60 goals in just over 200 matches. In the latter part of his time at Elland Road, the striker’s influence diminished. He participated in 18 games during the previous season when the Whites clinched the Championship title.
He was unable to score any goals in the 2024/25 season. Yet, Bamford is well-remembered in West Yorkshire for his contributions to two Premier League promotions and his 17-goal campaign in the top division in 2020/21 under Marcelo Bielsa.
The England international, who has one cap, is anticipated to join Jose Bordalas’ Getafe team, presently positioned eighth in Spain’s highest league.
Bamford will be competing for a spot in Bordalas’ squad with players such as Borja Mayoral and Adrian Liso. Bordalas’ teams are known for being difficult to defeat.
Mateo Joseph, another Leeds player who surpassed Bamford in the pecking order last season at Elland Road, is currently on loan with Real Mallorca, Getafe’s LaLiga rivals. The two players may face each other later this season.
Because of the amount of time Bamford has been away from regular game play, it might take some time for the 32-year-old to get up to par with his soon-to-be new team.
With that being stated, the player most likely has October 19 marked as the date he intends to be ready, when Real Madrid visits Estadio Coliseum.
Getafe will travel to Santiago Bernabeu for the rematch on March 1, 2026.
Bordalas, Bamford’s expected future manager, has faced critique in the past for supporting Mason Greenwood, a former Manchester United forward, who was loaned to Getafe in 2023/24.
“He’s a liberated individual, a top-tier soccer player who’s joining Getafe with significant eagerness. We will undoubtedly assist him in getting back to his highest potential,” Bordalas mentioned upon acquiring the former England player.
“I’ve already voiced my opinion. I can only comment from a soccer perspective. We’re all aware of his capabilities. He is a very young man, just 21, and we’re here to support his adjustment to the circumstances.”
He also referred to Greenwood as a ‘wonderful guy’ and ‘model professional’ after he was reportedly verbally attacked by Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid.
Greenwood, who is now being coached by Roberto De Zerbi at Olympique Marseille, was taken into custody in 2022 after photos and a voice recording appeared online. The accusations against him included attempted sexual assault, battery causing actual physical harm, and manipulative and oppressive behavior.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the United Kingdom declared in February 2023 that all charges against Greenwood had been dismissed. The CPS stated the choice was influenced by ‘the disengagement of crucial witnesses and new information that surfaced’, thus the prosecution no longer had a reasonable chance of securing a guilty verdict.
