The prospect of Mikel Arteta, the current head of Arsenal, taking over from Hansi Flick at Barcelona has surfaced, suggesting a potential return to his roots.
This month marks Arteta’s sixth anniversary as the leader of Arsenal. During his tenure, he has steered the team from what many consider their lowest point in recent history to a position where they are strong contenders for the Premier League title.
Mikel Arteta’s Contract with Arsenal Could Lead to a Future Barcelona Move
Arteta’s latest agreement with Arsenal, signed in 2024, commits him to the club until 2027, assuming he sees out the full term of the contract.
Sources within FourFourTwo indicate that the manager from Basque country is fully committed to honoring his agreement with Arsenal. However, amidst Hansi Flick’s challenges at Barcelona, the possibility of Arteta succeeding him has been a topic of discussion.
In a conversation with Casinostugan, Gaizka Mendieta, a former luminary of Barcelona, suggested that Arsenal may “not be considering” a move to Camp Nou. However, he also noted that the Catalans are likely monitoring Arteta’s situation as Flick faces increasing pressure.
Mendieta commented, “Barca as an organization is probably evaluating Arteta now. Planning ahead and compiling lists of potential coaches is standard practice, and I’m confident Arteta’s name features on those lists as a possible candidate.”
He further added, “Their shared history undeniably creates a bond, and given his status as one of the premier coaches in contemporary football, he’s bound to attract numerous offers, with Barca undoubtedly among them.”
“Ultimately, it hinges on his personal timing for leaving Arsenal. Whenever that moment arrives, I anticipate a rush of interest from various clubs keen to secure his services.”
While the scenario of Arteta departing on a high note after securing silverware this season is conceivable, FourFourTwo sources suggest that the degree of control he wields over the club is a significant factor in his commitment to the Gunners.
Since returning to the club as manager in 2019, Arteta has been the driving force behind the transformation of its culture. He has played a pivotal role not only in enhancing the matchday atmosphere but also in recruiting Andrea Berta as sporting director this year, with whom he anticipates a fruitful collaboration.
Barcelona, conversely, presents a vastly different dynamic, where the manager is accountable to the president. This environment proved challenging even for Pep Guardiola. Since Johan Cruyff’s departure in 1996, only two managers have enjoyed tenures exceeding three seasons – Guardiola being one of them, who subsequently required a year-long sabbatical after his four-year stint.
Arsenal is set to face Brentford at the Emirates Stadium as Premier League action resumes tomorrow.
