CHICAGO — Chicago Bears standout cornerback Jaylon Johnson landed on the injured list Saturday and will be inactive for at least four contests.
Johnson, age 26, experienced a groin problem this summer which caused him to be absent from all of training camp, the preseason games and Chicago’s opening game against Minnesota. He played in Week 2 at Detroit but had to leave the game in the second quarter after disrupting a pass.
He was ruled ineligible to continue in the game because of a groin issue, but Bears head coach Ben Johnson mentioned that the cornerback is dealing with another separate injury. Ben Johnson stated Friday that the organization was still exploring avenues for Jaylon Johnson’s treatment and that the cornerback had sought consultations from other medical professionals this week.
ESPN reported Monday that surgery is being considered for Johnson, who although eligible to return in Week 8 against Baltimore, is projected to miss a considerable amount of the current season.
“Clearly, when you are without a player of that quality it’s a substantial setback to your football team,” Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen commented. “Consequently, you have to modify your approach, the play calls you select, and each week is likely to present unique challenges.”
The Bears secondary unit will be without Johnson and nickel corner Kyler Gordon, who is listed as being assessed weekly with a hamstring ailment. Chicago has conceded a league-high seven passing touchdowns after two games.
Second year offensive lineman Kiran Amegadjie was also placed on injured reserve. Amegadjie was not on the active roster against Detroit but appeared on Wednesday’s injury report due to an elbow problem. He was absent from practice on both Thursday and Friday.
