Becker’s Wimbledon Win: A Young Regret?

After concluding his professional playing career in 1999, transitioning to television commentary, Becker served as Novak Djokovic’s coach for a three-year period spanning 2013 to 2016, contributing to the Serbian player’s acquisition of six of his 24 Grand Slam championships.

The individual, aged 57, who has authored a literary work detailing his experiences during incarceration, stated that he derived solace from Djokovic’s triumph at Wimbledon in 2022.

“During that period, I actively supported Djokovic while observing his progress on television, witnessing his victories in matches and ultimately his attainment of the title against Nick Kyrgios,” he articulated.

“That experience was profoundly inspirational for me, and ultimately evoked strong emotions within me. My close associate, Novak, is achieving success while I am confined within one of the most challenging penal institutions globally. This situation provides a valuable perspective on the nature of life.”

Following his release from imprisonment, Becker was subjected to deportation from the United Kingdom.

“I had become excessively complacent. I possessed an abundance of financial resources. No one ever declined my requests; all possibilities seemed attainable. In retrospect, this constitutes a formula for adverse outcomes,” he reflected.

“Consequently, one must assume responsibility for their actions, a crucial step as dwelling on the past is futile. The past cannot be altered. Only the future can be influenced, as we exist in the present moment.”
