The anticipated debut of Bill Belichick as a college head coach became more about excitement than the actual performance on Monday evening.
The familiar hooded sweatshirt, synonymous with Belichick’s leadership of the New England Patriots, had been absent from the sidelines of a competitive match since January 2024.
Regrettably for those present at Kenan Stadium, Belichick’s introduction to UNC resembled the conclusion of his time in New England, marked by a defeat. Following a touchdown on their initial drive, the Tar Heels conceded 41 consecutive points, resulting in a significant 48-14 loss.
Despite the unfavorable result, Belichick’s premiere as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels was a notable event, drawing numerous athletes and celebrities who came to support him in his new endeavor, as UNC commenced its season against TCU on Monday evening.

Prior to the game’s commencement, Belichick completed his initial game-day walk in Chapel Hill as UNC’s head coach.
Once spectators entered Kenan Memorial Stadium, notable figure sightings began, starting with a collection of UNC legends present to observe the inaugural game of the Belichick era.
NBA icon Michael Jordan and NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor joined former basketball coach Roy Williams to witness the unfolding history and cheer for their Tar Heels.
Also reported to be in attendance were USA Women’s Soccer star and UNC alum Mia Hamm, former NFL star and Tar Heel Julius Peppers and country singer Eric Church, among others.
How Belichick got to Chapel Hill
Following Belichick’s final game with New England, he was unsuccessful in securing another NFL coaching position, choosing instead to author a book and subsequently assume leadership of the Tar Heels football program.
Belichick’s on-field achievements, which include six Super Bowl victories as head coach and three AP Coach of the Year awards, have not been the primary focus of discussion since his arrival at UNC. Rather, the presence of Belichick’s girlfriend Jordon Hudson, particularly within his professional dealings and at the UNC facility, has garnered substantial attention during his new tenure with the Tar Heels.
She was observed in a box alongside NFL legend Randy Moss.
Considered by many to be the greatest coach in NFL history, anticipation is high to see how “The Patriot Way” will translate to the collegiate level. Although the transition has not been entirely seamless, this game was a significant event in Belichick’s career. His six Super Bowl rings, however, clearly did not guarantee success at the college level. Only the future will reveal the Tar Heels’ trajectory from this point.
