Up next, we have Basil Tuton ranked as running back 24.
They are playing on the road against the Denver Broncos, which is significant because Tuton broke several tackles and gained additional yards. Now he faces a Denver defense that recorded the highest number of missed tackles during week one.
Still, there’s no guarantee that trend will persist in this matchup.
Indeed, it was quite surprising to see Denver struggle so much with their tackling.
It really felt out of character for them based on what we’ve seen historically.
We shall see how that unfolds.
Basil Tuton certainly put together a strong performance.
At first, I felt he overlooked a few reads, but after reviewing the statistics and game tape, I realized I was probably being overly harsh on him.
His ability to break so many tackles means he deserves more credit.
He still had a few of those habits that worry me, but with his level of athleticism, he is bound to shake off defenders.
You can accept those flaws, which aligns perfectly with Liam Cohen’s post-game remarks.
Meanwhile, Chris Rodriguez got some playing time.
It seemed like they were splitting snaps evenly up until the half.
The final quarter turned into a massive blowout, a scenario I don’t foresee happening in this upcoming game.
Actually, the Jaguars are projected to lose by a slim margin.
They fed Basil Tuton several touches late in the game to help build up his experience.
And honestly, I remain uncertain about who will handle goal-line duties.
If I could be sure Basil Tuton would handle at least half of those situations, I’d rank him higher.
My expectation is that Chris Rodriguez will still get some work there, leading to a general committee approach across the entire field.
It could prove challenging this week, but down the road, I’d love to see Basil Tuton get cleaner paths through the first and second levels, perhaps aided by improved blocking from the receivers.
That way, the initial defender he has to shake off would be in the secondary or downfield. Even during the passing game against Cleveland, if he had just escaped one final tackle, he would have been off to the races for nearly a 40-yard gain.
We haven’t witnessed that kind of explosive 40-yard play from Basil Tuton quite yet.
That’s true.
However, I believe a play like that is coming soon.
Without a doubt.
His athletic profile is simply too high.
He is bound to produce those big plays.
It is worth noting that the offensive line in Jacksonville has struggled quite a bit.
Agreed.
They managed to hold up reasonably well in terms of protecting the passer.
Still, it wasn’t as though he was running through massive, wide-open lanes on the ground.
And I suppose that’s what we expected from the start.
We anticipated this reality, which mirrors exactly how things played out last season.
